9th Green Castlerock
Damian Mooney likes to keep it interesting by mixing his game as he showed at Castlerock in the PING PGA Ulster Golfers' Alliance outing.
The big man shot down three eagles but also three-putted three times and balanced a birdie three with a bogey five as he posted a winning three-under-par 70.
To get everyone a full round of golf, a two-tee start was organised and Mooney blasted off at the 10th hole but three-stabbed that green. He repeated the performance at the 12th and lost another shot at 16 where he put his second shot into bushes and had to take a penalty drop.
Then he turned on the player power for which he is famous. At the long 17th he was short with a drive and four iron but chipped in for eagle and birdied the next from nine feet to turn in level par 37.
He was back to one over after losing a ball off the first tee but was back to regulation when he drove the edge of the second green and chipped to three inches for birdie. His second eagle flew in at the third hole, carved out by a drive and seven iron to eight feet, with his third eagle landing at the fifth where he rifled a drive and eight iron to one foot.
On the eighth surface the winner again three-stabbed for bogey five and finished with a par for a homeward run of three-under-33.
Three amateurs shared 39 points with Brian Rossi (Belvoir Pk) best on the back nine with 22. Stephen Doran (Mourne) came home in 20 strokes for second spot while former professional Kenny Stevenson (Warrenpoint) took third spot with 18 back.
The gross prize was won by Johnny Hagan, a plus-one handicapper from Kirkistown Castle, with a one-over-74 while topping the team leaderboard was the Portadown combination of pro Paul Stevenson and his dad Kenny, Edgar McReynolds and Bill Nixon.
They posted 94 points.
