Donabate Golf Club is among 30 golf clubs newly accredited under the National Standards Framework for Golf Clubs by Fáilte Ireland . These new standards were developed in conjunction with the Golf Quality Assurance Group as part of the Golf Forums role in developing golf in Ireland. 

They follow the customer's journey through the booking process from their arrival at the course and reception and clubhouse facilities, all the way to golf standards and post game facilities to ensure that the customer can expect -

High quality customer service from all staff, who can provide information on costs, tee-times, course disruptions and more from arrival through to departure

The golf course is in good condition with good maintenance practices in place

The clubhouse facilities and food and beverage services are of appropriate quality and condition

That the club meets all health and safety standards and legal obligations

Good signage and clean building on arrival with adequate car parking

That adequate facilities are made available for mobility impaired guests

Minister Rings in Irish Open Wecome

Michael Ring TD, Ireland’s Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, was an interested observer among the large crowds at Fota Island Resort for the third round of the 2014 Irish Open.

The Minister toured the facilities at Fota Island Resort and took the chance to welcome some of the players from the impressive international field, with seven different nationalities represented in the top ten at the halfway stage.

With three Irish players – Padraig Harrington, Gareth Maybin and Graeme McDowell – among those in contention, and with large galleries and glorious weather so far, this year’s Irish Open has already been a magnificent showcase for golf in Ireland.

The Minister, in the company of Tony Lenehan, Head of Golf Tourism for Fáilte Ireland, and James Finnigan, Commercial Director of the Irish Open from the European Tour, were on the first tee to watch some of the leading groups tee off, including three-time Major Champion Harrington, who is Fáilte Ireland’s Golf Ambassador, and McDowell, who will start Sunday's final round just two shots behind leader Mikko Ilonen.

Minister Leo Varadkar TD, Ireland’s Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, also visited Fota Island Resort during Thursday’s opening round and welcomed more than 100 members of the international media at a reception at Fota Island Hotel.

Then on Sunday afternoon, An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, will join George O'Grady, Chief Executive of The European Tour, in presenting the trophy to the 2014 Irish Open Champion.

Irish Golf Awards 2013

A host of Ireland’s leading golf tourism companies were recognised in Killarney at the 2013 Gala Irish Golf Awards, the pinnacle of a three day National Golf Tourism Conference supported by The European Tour.

The 16th IGTOA National Golf Tourism Conference and 2013 Gala Irish Golf Awards is the largest gathering of golf industry and golf tourism professionals across the island of Ireland each year and is hosted in conjunction with Fáilte Ireland, the Northern Ireland Tourist Board and Tourism Ireland.

Each year the IGTOA – Ireland Golf Tour Operator Association – recognises a person in the international golf industry that has made a significant contribution to Irish golf throughout their life and career, through the presenting of the Jerry Donworth Lifetime Achievement Award, an award presented last year to European Ryder Cup Director Richard Hills.

Jay Connolly, Director of the Waterville Golf Links was recognised this year for the pivotal role he has played throughout his life in Irish golf, the award being presented to him by Minister Michael Ring, the Minister for Sport and Tourism.

Richard Hills – who was once again in attendance in Killarney alongside a number of special guests including Minister Jimmy Deenihan from Kerry, the local Minister for Arts, Hertiage and Gaeltacht – was the first to offer his congratulations.

“Speaking personally, I know how much of a thrill it is to receive the Jerry Donworth Award and I want to congratulate Jay on his achievement,” said Hills. “I also want to congratulate all the award winners on a wonderful night which once again recognised the sterling work undertaken by the golf tourism industry as a whole in Ireland.”

The event is run each year by the Ireland Golf Tour Operator Association (IGTOA) which is an organisation represents the National Irish Golf Tourism Industry and is pro-active in the promotion, growth and development of Irish Golf Tourism overseas.

Murtagh Weighs in at Carton Pro-Am

The stars of stage, screen and sport will be out in force this week for the curtain-raiser for the Irish Open – the Wednesday Pro-Am - takes place at Carton House.

Jockey Johnny Murtagh, fresh from his incredible performance at Royal Ascot last week where he booted home four winners to land the title of Leading Jockey over the five days of sizzling action.

Murtagh will be participating in the morning ‘shotgun’ section of Wednesday’s Pro-Am (08.00 start), aiming to ‘whip up’ support for the popular European Tour event which heralds a packed weekend of sport for the County of Kildare, with the The Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby also taking place nearby in the Curragh.

Already this week the jockey has enjoyed pitting his wits against the 176 yard par 3 17th hole, where around 1500 spectators can cheer their favourites from a superb grandstand surrounding the green. Wristbands for ‘Open House@17’ are available for purchase at €10 per day.

Also from the world of sport in the Pro-Am is Dubliner Ken Doherty, the 1997 World Snooker Champion, who will be hoping to ‘pot’ a few birdies along with his fellow members of RESPECT Ireland, the Official Charity of the Irish Open 2013.

Former Chelsea footballer, Andriy Shevchenko shows off his prowess on the golf course in the company of leading Irish businessman and financier Dermot Desmond, also in the morning Shotgun, while the world of music is represented by former Westlife singer Brian McFadden and Keith Duffy of Ireland’s other famous ‘boy band’ Boyzone.

Fáilte Ireland’s Head of Golf Tourism, Tony Lenehan said: “If you love sport, this is the weekend for you and Kildare is the place to be. Even if you just like a good mixture of spectacle, excitement and socialising then make sure you get out of the traps and book your ticket now.”

Four Irish Major Champions – Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy - will compete at Carton House along with Carton’s Touring Professional, Shane Lowry, a host of Tour winners and Ryder Cup stars including 2014 captain Paul McGinley.

The stage is set for a superb platform for the event’s return to the Republic of Ireland after a visit to Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland last year.

To complement the sporting action, Maynooth, Celbrigde and Leixlip - the “Three Irish Open Towns” as they are known locally - have joined forces to ensure that local tourism and business interests embrace the Irish Open as an opportunity to promote all that is great about the county.
