Ireland Men in Nations Cup Chase

Ireland made an encouraging start yesterday to their bid for the European Nations Cup at Sotogrande on Spain's Costa Del Sol.

After the opening round they were in a share for second place alongside the host country and Austria, only one stroke behind leaders France, the reigning World champions.

Ballymena's Dermot McElroy was in fine form, firing a splendid 69, while Rathmore's Irish Champion Alan Dunbar returned a 71 and Portstewart's Walker Cup hopeful Paul Cutler a 72 as the other counting scores.

Rory Leonard from Banbridge was out of sorts with a 79.

McElroy, one of the rising stars of Irish golf, hardly put a foot wrong as he occupied one of the leading individual places at the end of day one.

His short game was immaculate around this testing lay-out of the Real Club De Golf.

Only two players -- German Marcel Schneider, with a sizzling 65, and Frenchman Julien Brun, who went round in 68, had better returns than McElroy.

Ireland are two strokes ahead of Scotland and four clear of England, who are chasing a third consecutive European Nations

EUROPRO Returns to Galgorm Castle

Galgorm Castle Golf Club will host the Galgorm Castle Northern Ireland PGA EuroPro Open for the second successive year.

Building on the highly successful staging of the inaugural event in 2010 - when England’s James Hepworth won from a dramatic play-off with Australia’s Daniel Gaunt - the 2011 championship promises to be even bigger and better.

The championship course at Galgorm Castle is rated as one of the finest parklands in the country and will once more test the leading professionals on the PGA EuroPro to their limits.

Players from Ireland and the UK, plus across Europe and beyond will tee it up in the 54-hole strokeplay event where a prize pot of £40,000 is on offer with £10,000 going to the winner.

“I am delighted the PGA EuroPro Tour is returning to Galgorm this year,” explained Christopher Brooke, Galgorm Castle. “It is a reward to everyone involved in 2010 who made it such a success.

“We are now focusing on making 2011 an even better event as it’s a great opportunity for the people of Northern Ireland to see a top professional golf tournament on their doorstep and to promote the ‘Golfing at Galgorm’ experience to an international audience.”

Galgorm Castle has been working closely with their partners at the prestigious Galgorm Resort & Spa, and with significant investment from both parties, has created the “ultimate golfing destination in Ireland” certain to cater for every golfers’ need.

This event offers free entry to the general public and spectator numbers are expected to exceed last year for the only high profile professional golf tournament to be held in the province this year.

Based on figures from last year, the local economy is expected to benefit in the region of £250,000 with over 1,000 bed nights required as the 156-player player field, plus caddies, officials and spectators arrive to the Ballymena area.

The tournament will be broadcast on Sky Sports, who in turn ensure coverage reaches over 50 countries through established sports channels such as ESPN, Star TV Asia and The Golf Channel in the United States.

This year’s event takes place from Wednesday, June 29 to Friday, July 1.

The official practice day is Monday, June 27 before the George Best Invitational Pro-Am serves as the event curtain-raiser on Tuesday, June 28.

After this the Gala Dinner and Charity Auction will take place at the Galgorm Resort & Spa.

Peter Martin Wins Race to Dunluce

Peter Martin stormed over the finishing line in first place as the PING PGA Ulster Golfers' Alliance qualifiers completed the last lap in their Race to Dunluce.

Martin carded a one-under-par on the jumbo track to be one stroke ahead of Peter Stevenson, despite stalling at the start with a bogey five as he three-putted the first green.

Back-to-back birdie threes at the fourth and fifth holes revved up Martin's round as he slotted in a 10-footer at the fourth and drove the edge of the next green. However, another three-stab on the eighth left the Riverside Academy head pro out in level par 36.

At the long 10th, the winner reached the green with a drive and three iron, 15 feet from the flag, and got home in two from there. When he missed the green and found sand at the 15th, Martin failed to get up-and-down to pencil in his third bogey five of the round but he got that shot back at 16 when he made birdie three with a drive and eight iron to eight feet.

Best amateur on the day was Shandon Park three-handicapper Johnny Taylor who posted a nett 37 points. Johnny Hagan, who plays off plus-one out of Kirkistown Castle, took the gross prize on two-over-par 74.

Dungannon players collected the team award as pro Chris Jelly was joined by Damian Jackson (13), Kevin Hamilton (13) and Derek Chambers (14). They carded 89 points.

Nicholas tees off Solheim Ambassadors

European Solheim Cup Captain Alison Nicholas treated over 100 golfers to a special clinic in Killeen Castle, host venue to The Solheim Cup in September this year. The clinic was one of the first in Nicholas’ tour of the country which will see the former British and US Women’s Open winner visit 30 golf clubs as part of The Solheim Cup Club Ambassador Programme, a recruitment drive to encourage members to support Europe in the showdown against the USA.

The event at Killeen Castle saw locals, members and nearby Meath club ambassadors given a ‘once in a lifetime lesson’ by the English golfer who encouraged all club golfers to come out and support the European team in September. The Ambassador Programme is aiming to secure key representatives in golf clubs nationwide with the dual aims of generating massive spectator support from Irish club golfers and creating a dynamic bond between spectators and the European team in advance of the event. The role of each Club Ambassador is to help build awareness of The 2011 Solheim Cup within their ranks and to actively encourage and communicate to fellow members how they can purchase tickets for the tournament in September.

The Solheim Cup Club Ambassador Director, Shane Daly commented; “Alison is already proving a fantastic European captain and her preparations for the big event at Killeen Castle in September are meticulous. Her knowledge and experience in the game of golf is outstanding and a lot of golfers around the country will benefit from this at the clinics Alison will host throughout the country. Having played in six Solheim Cups she is aware of the advantage a strong home support can bring and the Club Ambassador Programme tour is designed to help generate this.”

The Solheim Cup is the most prestigious international team event in women’s professional golf and one of the biggest international sporting events to be staged in Ireland this year and will take place on the stunning Jack Nicklaus Signature Course in Killeen Castle, County Meath.

Club History - Castle Father and Son

It all started in1961 when some Juveniles got together and proposed the idea of a competition in which they could participate on a Saturday. The Captain of the day Gerry Garland suggested a Father and Son Foursomes and that was it. The first year it was an internal affair confined to Castle members. The inaugural winners were Dick and Tom Lenehan and it was played over 18 holes stroke play.

The following year it was opened to other Clubs and it continued as stroke play until 1964 when it altered to its present format of match play. The first winners in that year were Davy and Brian Knott. The Rules of the Competition have remained the same ever since.

As years passed the event became more and more popular and to accommodate the increasing numbers a pre-qualifying round was introduced. The time sheet started at 6.00am; still there was a waiting list so in recent years the qualifying had to be extended to Saturday and Sunday.Over the years many Irish Internationals and current professionals have taken part. Mark Bloom(and his father Jack ,the donor of the Bloom Cup), Jody Fanagan, Tom Craddock, Noel Fox to mention a few.

Of course the most famous winners in 1967 were the late Joe Carr and son Roddy.

J B Carr was a very busy golfer in those days; so to facilitate him a special parking spot was reserved beside the clubhouse. At the recent Pro-Am in Castle Phillip Walton recalled how he caddied for his father in 1973 when the Waltons were successful. Martin Sludds, now a professional in the south of England was a beaten finalist.

The McKennas from Bray twice and the Powers from Stackstown three times are the only multiple winners. In the early '80s a regular entry come from the then President of Ireland Dr. Paddy Hillery and son John; sadly they never made the match play.

Over the years we have had entries from all over Ireland and from time to time from across the water. Every year since 1961in early July, the All Ireland Father and Son Competition takes place without interruption...There was one exception; in 1973 during the qualifying round, the Gardai arrived to announce there was a bomb scare, (maybe someone who could not get on the time sheet !!!) and the clubhouse and course were to be evacuated.

Competitors were told to mark their place on the fairways and greens, vacate the grounds and only continue when the search had been completed. When the all clear was sounded, after almost three hours, play continued. Quite a few groups did not help their chances of making it to the match-play rounds after retiring to the local ale house during the break.

It speaks volumes for the popularity of the All Ireland Father and Son that it grows from strength to strength and it has never been found necessary to alter the format since 1964.

R&A / USGA - Electronic Devices

As the governing authorities for the Rules of Golf, R&A Rules Limited (“The R&A”) and the United States Golf Association (“USGA”) issued a ‘Joint Statement of Principles’ on the Rules concerning golf equipment in May 2002. These principles continue to be relevant to the game and have proved invaluable in guiding the governing authorities’ actions since their publication seven years ago.

Since that time, the effects of advancing equipment technology on the playing of the game have spread beyond golf clubs and golf balls to electronic devices, especially distancemeasuring devices. The R&A and USGA are aware that this subject has attracted wideranging comment and a number of conflicting views. History has proved that it is difficult, if not impossible, to foresee the developments in golf-related equipment which advancing technology will deliver. It is of the greatest importance to golf’s continuing appeal that such advances are judged against clearly articulated principles that are designed to preserve the integrity of the sport.

Distance Information
In an historical context, the game has seen progressive developments in the means by which distance information is available to golfers. From the days when selecting a club was a matter of human judgement, the use of yardage books and hole location sheets and reference to oncourse markings has increased significantly. Most recently, the use of distance-measuring devices has become more widespread.

The R&A and USGA first allowed the use of distance-measuring devices in January 2006. Prior to this, while the use of yardage books was allowed, the use of distance-measuring devices was prohibited by Rule 14-3. The change introduced in 2006 permitted the committee in charge of a competition or course to introduce a Local Rule allowing distancemeasuring devices. A very important proviso of this permission is that the device must measure distance only; it must not measure other conditions such as wind speed or direction, the slope of the ground or the temperature.

The Rules and their Purpose
While accepting this development in the provision of distance information, The R&A and USGA will remain vigilant when considering the Rules on distance-measuring devices. As with the equipment Rules, the purpose of these Rules is to protect golf’s best traditions, to prevent an over-reliance on technological advances rather than skill, and to ensure that skill is the dominant element of success throughout the game. Permitting the use of a measuring device to provide the same information that can be obtained through use of a yardage book or on-course markings is not considered to diminish the skill level required to play the game.

The R&A and USGA believe that the current practice of allowing distance-measuring devices by Local Rule remains appropriate. In the current circumstances, The R&A and USGA are not advocating that this practice should be changed and neither The R&A nor USGA plan to introduce the Local Rule at any of their championships.

A Clarification of the Rules
The emergence of multi-functional devices that can provide additional information to golfers (that could, for example, further help the golfer to determine how to make his next stroke or that could otherwise affect his playing of the game) is a relatively new development. For the avoidance of doubt, the governing bodies do not believe that it is necessary or appropriate for the Rules of Golf to allow all such devices. The following points clarify how the Rules will be applied:

1. Distance-measuring devices (i.e. devices whose primary function is to measure distance) may continue to be used only if the Local Rule is in effect.

2. When the Local Rule is in effect, distance-measuring devices must be limited to measuring distance only. The use of a distance-measuring device would constitute a breach of the Rules if:

•The device has the capability of gauging or measuring other conditions that might affect play (e.g. wind speed, gradient, temperature, etc), or;
•The device has some other non-conforming feature, including, but not limited to, recommendations that might assist the player in making a stroke or in his play, such as club selection, type of shot to be played (e.g. punch shot, pitch and run, etc.), or green reading (i.e. a recommended line of putt), or other advice-related matters. However, it is permissible to use such a device, during a stipulated round, to access distance information from previous rounds that has been processed prior to the commencement of the current round (e.g. a chart of all club yardages), or;
•The device has the capability to assist in calculating the effective distance between two points (i.e. distance after considering gradient, wind speed and/or direction, temperature or other environmental factors).

There would be a breach of the Rules even if all of the above features can be switched off or disengaged, and in fact are switched off or disengaged.

3. Multi-functional devices such as mobile phones, PDAs, etc (i.e. devices that are primarily communication devices, but which may have other potential uses) may be used as follows:

•The device may be used for any non-golfing purpose (e.g. as a communication tool to phone, text or email), subject to any club / course regulations and the Rules on accessing advice-related matters – see Decision 14-3/16.
•When the Local Rule is in effect, a distance-measuring application may be used, provided the specific application is restricted to “distance only” and the device does not have any other “non-conforming” features. This is the case even if these other features are not being used. As above, the Rules on advice-related communications (including the use of the internet) still apply.
Conclusion

The R&A and USGA have no intention to permit the use of electronic devices to go beyond the current Rules and interpretations. This means that distance-measuring devices and applications will be limited to distance information only. If a device that is being used for distance-measuring purposes has any additional features, all such features must conform to the Rules of Golf.

All manufacturers of distance-measuring products are encouraged to submit their devices or applications to the appropriate governing body for a ruling.

Gulf Golf Enjoying Good Performance

Golf in the Gulf is keeping its head above water better than most in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMA) region enjoying the best levels of business performance during 2010, according to the latest KPMG Golf Benchmark Survey.

The survey, published ahead of the KPMG Golf Business Forum at Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club, April 17-19, 2011, reveals some three-quarters (73%) of golf courses in the combined Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region enjoyed 'good' performance during the past 12 months - almost twice as many as in Central Europe (41%), the next best ranked region for this measure.

Facilities in the prosperous Middle East have retained the high levels of performance highlighted in previous surveys, and the development of courses in the Gulf, aligned to high-end resorts and residential communities, continues apace.

Indeed, eight out of 10 course owners (82%) - almost 20% more than the next highest area, Benelux - intend to invest capital in improving their facility during the coming year. This ties in closely with the fact that not one owner in MENA would consider selling up, despite the current global economic downturn.

With these plans in the pipeline, it is of little surprise that courses in MENA, compared to others across EMA, are the most optimistic with regards to future business performance - 81% expect to perform better during 2011 than last year with a fifth having already reached pre-downturn levels of performance.

Hesham Al Qassim, CEO of wasl, the owner of Dubai Golf and one of the leading operators in the region, said, "2010 was a very successful year for Dubai Golf. The results that we have achieved so far in 2011 have also been very encouraging and we have seen positive growth in all areas of the business at both Emirates Golf Club and Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, in particular we have seen a significant increase in the number of overseas players at both clubs which is encouraging for the remainder of the year."

Despite this continued encouraging performance and perceived continued upsurge in the demand for golf in the Middle East, the region has not been totally immune from the continued fallout from the recession.

While all Middle East golf facilities encouragingly reported at least 'good' or 'average' performances in 2010, this contrasts with the largely 'excellent' reports of previous years. And while more than half (55%) returned a gross operating profit - a growing demand for golf allied to expensive green and annual fees, helping boost revenues - others have been less successful with 45% of facilities keeping costs in check by making staff cuts.

Andrea Sartori, head of KPMG's Golf Advisory Practice, said, "The survey's findings confirm the continued strong performance of the Middle East's golf courses, thanks to its small but growing number of high-quality facilities, and its increasingly prominent place on the global golf stage. However, the future optimism of course owners will undoubtedly be tempered by the region's current social and political turbulence - and this may, in the short term, see a fall in the number of tourists upon whom many courses rely for their business."

The Open at Home of Golf Proves Valuable

Royal and Ancient at St. Andrews

Open Championship organiser, The R&A, and EventScotland today announced that the 150th Anniversary Open Championship staged in St Andrews, last year, delivered a combined £100 million benefit to Scotland.

The figure exceeds an £80 million forecast by researchers from the Sport Industry Research Centre (SIRC) at Sheffield Hallam Universityrevealed by First Minister Alex Salmond visiting the Championship last July.

The headline number includes a Scotland-wide economic impact of £47.4 million and a destination-marketing benefit of £52.6 million, calculated from global television coverage presenting Scotland as the ‘The Home of Golf’.

The independent research study, commissioned jointly by The R&A and EventScotland, found that most of the economic impact was focussed on St Andrews and the Fife Council area, with £40.1 million entering the local economy directly attributable to The Open Championship.

Commenting on the research outcome, The R&A’s Chief Executive, Peter Dawson, said: “The Open Championship averages six appearances in Scotland in a ten-year cycle and we are delighted that the only Major Championship staged outside the United States delivers such a powerful legacy to the country recognised, the world over, as the Home of Golf”.

Reviewing the findings, Paul Bush OBE, Chief Operating Officer for EventScotland said: “Today’s results are wonderful news for both Fife and Scotland.

“The Open Championship in 2010 was a spectacle for everyone who attended and the figures show the undisputed benefit to Scotland of regularly hosting one of the most prestigious sporting events in the world.”

The 2010 study was based on 3,000 interviews conducted by the SIRC team, including players, spectators, sponsors, event staff, organisers and the media with overseas visitors to The Open from 43 countries identified by the research.

Compared with findings from research carried out at The Open Championship at St Andrews in 2005, the overall economic benefit of staging the event has grown by more than 25% in five years.

Annika stepped away from professional golf after the 2008 season to focus on her family and the ANNIKA brand of businesses, which include the ANNIKA Academy, ANNIKA Foundation, ANNIKA Financial Group, ANNIKA Course Design, the ANNIKA Collection of apparel with Cutter & Buck, signature high-end wines with Wente Vineyards, and an online retail shop, shopannika.com. The ANNIKA brand is becoming one of the most recognised brands in world golf.

As one of the two vice-Captains to Alison Nicholas for the upcoming Solheim Cup - to be held for the first time ever in Ireland this September in Killeen Castle, Co. Meath - Annika is a committed ambassador for the game around the world and is a dedicated supporter of getting girls into golf at a young age. As the most successful female golfer ever, there is no one better placed to inspire the next generation of Irish golfers.

"I am happy to be able to share my passion for growing the game of golf globally, specifically for junior girls," said Annika. "I couldn't have achieved what I did without support from an early age, and I love being able to give back in some way now".

"I'm excited to be working with the ILGU," continued Annika. "It's the oldest ladies golf union in the world and its record for promoting and supporting the game is incredible. Together, I believe we can have a positive effect on girls golf in Ireland and hopefully inspire the juniors to follow their dreams and reach their potential in golf."

The "ILGU Junior Medal sponsored by ANNIKA in association with Golf Digest Ireland" is the latest in a number of steps taken in this country in recent years to grow the female game and one of many spear-headed by the ILGU.

Sinead Herarty, the Chief Executive of the ILGU said, "The development and growth of Girls golf is a key priority for the ILGU. To have a player of the reputation and stature of Annika encouraging more girls to participate in the game is a wonderful opportunity for us in the ILGU and we look forward to the momentum her endorsement will bring to this competition. I know all the girls will compete to the best of their abilities and the opportunity to meet Annika at the Solheim Cup will be a great incentive."

The aim of the Junior Medal is to encourage girls of all standards to participate in golf competitions. Open to all female juniors (under 18 years of age on 01/01 of each year) who are members of an ILGU affiliated club, the qualifying period for the ILGU Junior Medal Final will begin is May and continue to July. Then, the 60 girls with the lowest aggregate of three nett score differentials (relative to CSS), one in each month, will qualify for the Final, which will be played at Seapoint Golf Club, Co. Louth on 23 August 2011.

Although traditionally a Medal competition is played under the strokes format of golf, the Junior Medal Final will be played under the stableford format - with a shot-gun start in operation. It is hoped that this will enhance the experience by creating an encouraging, social and competitive environment.

The gold ILGU Junior Medal will be awarded to the overall winner at the Final, with the silver medal awarded to player with playing handicaps up to 20 and bronze medal awarded to player with playing handicaps of 21-36 inclusive.

As part of the commitment, on Sunday 18 September, just days before the Solheim Cup, Annika and Golf Digest Ireland will be hosting a special Q&A forum for the ILGU and 200 of their girls at the Dunboyne Castle Hotel & Spa. The three victorious players, plus the gross winner, will be invited to have lunch with Annika and will receive their medals at the special and very unique ILGU event afterwards.

David P Jones Unavailable for Matchplay

David P Jones stormed to the top of the leaderboard in the final qualifying round of the Ping PGA Ulster Grand Prix but won't be available for the matchplay stages later this month.

The Royal Portrush assistant posted a winning two-under-par 68 from The Valley Course to slot into second place on the table but immediately withdrew from the shootout stakes. That allowed ninth-placed Gary Wardlow into the draw.

Jones made use of local knowledge as he pencilled in half-a-dozen birdies, including a winning one at the last hole. That gave him a one stroke advantage over David Hughes and Damian Mooney, who had already won the Grand Prix Order of Merit.

A drive and a wedge to 30 feet set up birdie four at the fourth hole for Derryman Jones and he backed that up by driving the 335-yards fifth green to 20 feet for birdie three. He gave one shot back when he missed the green at the short sixth hole but made birdie three at eight with a 15-footer.

Out in two-under-33, Jones continued his charge with back-to-back birdies at the long 10th and short 11th holes. An eight iron to 20 feet and two putts gave him his four at 10 and he rifled a sand-iron to one foot for his two at 11.

Then the wheels came off as the winner missed the green at the 13th and 15th to card bogey six and bogey four and he three-putted the 17th for bogey five, before finishing in a style with a six iron to 10 feet for his winning birdie two at the last.

Those who have made the matchplay draw have until Friday to pull out if they find they cannot make the starting tape at Killymoon on Thursday, March 31st.
