McIlroy Will Win Masters - Clarke

Getty Images
Darren Clarke says Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy will win at Augusta one day, which would complete a career Grand Slam for his 25-year-old compatriot.

The world No 1 will arrive in Georgia in early April hoping to claim victory in the only major to elude him so far.

He will also tee-up at the Masters keen to make it three major triumphs in a row – following his successes last summer in the Open and PGA Championship.

Just five golfers have won each of the big four titles – Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tiger Woods – and, according to Clarke, McIlroy will join this illustrious group at some stage during his career.

Since winning the PGA title last August, McIlroy’s sole victory came in Dubai during February and Clarke told Sky Sports News HQ: “Rory’s the sort of player who can win anywhere, any time.

“He started this year well in the desert, and then went to the States where he hasn't quite found his full game yet.

“But it’s only a matter of time before he wins at Augusta – whether it’s this year, next year, whenever. His game is ideally suited to playing a high, long draw which you need at Augusta.”

And Clarke is hoping Tiger Woods makes 'a welcome return’ to competitive action at the year’s first major championship.

He added: “It would be great to see Tiger at Augusta. The game misses him, we want him back out there, playing well on Tour.

“All the players want Tiger back. He’s set the benchmark for a long, long time when he was the best of the best. I believe he’s got a lot of great golf left in him and any event in which Tiger plays makes it more special.”

Woods, who turns 40 later this year, failed to post a top-10 throughout 2014, has not won a tournament for 19 months and last secured a major in 2008.

On a personal note, Clarke says he intends to play a full schedule during 2015 before focusing his attention on skippering the European Ryder Cup team.

“This year I will be predominantly playing. The points for qualifying will start mid-to-late September, so from that stage I’ll be keeping a closer eye on things," he said.

“So my playing schedule will be limited next year.”

He also believes that his form has improved recently because he has other things on his mind – such as the Ryder Cup captaincy – and is therefore not preoccupied with his own game.

Clarke said: “The honour of being awarded the captaincy means I’m thinking a little bit less about my own game.

McIlroy Needs Master Woods - McGinley

Paul McGinley believes Rory McIlroy could benefit from Tiger Woods featuring at The Masters.

McIlroy can become just sixth player to complete the Grand Slam of all four major titles with victory at Augusta next month, joining Woods, Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus.

Woods is without a major since the 2008 US Open and hasn’t claimed a green jacket for a decade, but the now world No 87 is still ‘hopeful’ of featuring in the tournament he has previously won four times.

While attention is currently on the Northern Irishman, McGinley, who will be part of Sky Sports’ commentary team at Augusta, knows the focus surrounding Woods’ current struggles would make life easier for McIlroy next month.

"Look what happened at the US PGA last year, all the talk was 'is Tiger going to play, is he not going to play?',” McGinley said. "At the time Rory was favourite, but all the expectation, all the talk, all you guys (the media) were focused on was Tiger.

"Rory didn't sneak in the back door, but he was able to go about his business without the attention on him. I do hope Tiger comes back, we all hope Tiger comes back. I don't know if he will or not, we'll have to wait and see."

The 14-time major winner has made just two starts on the PGA Tour this year, missing the cut at the Phoenix Open after a career-worst 82 before withdrawing just 11 holes in to the Farmers Insurance Open.

With injury adding to Woods’ shocking short-game woes, the 39-year-old said he was taking time out from the sport in order to work on his game and will also miss this week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, a venue where he has won eight times.

"When you see a guy who was as great with the chipping as Tiger was, is he going to come back from it? We really don't know," McGinley added.

"My hunch would be there's something bigger going on. There's no doubt Tiger has peaked in terms of when guys normally play their best golf. That doesn't mean he's finished, but certainly he is in the back nine of his career."

Defending champion Bubba Watson believes that there is no pressure on him to retain his title at Augusta National, where victory would make him only the fourth player defend his Masters crown.

Watson, who is eyeing a third Green Jacket after also winning in 2012, told reporters: "Obviously, I think he (McIlroy) would have more pressure than me, because look at the talent he has and the records he could beat when he gets older."

"He's got years, he's got his whole life to try to win the Masters, but obviously ... he's going to put pressure on himself."

Woods’ place as the face of golf on EA Sports’ PGA Tour video games has come to an end after 17 years, with McIlroy now featuring on its cover.

The "Rory McIlroy PGA Tour" will be released in June, with the Northern Irishman saying in a statement he was “very proud and humbled” to be used for the game.

Harrington Not Down on Irish Open

Padraig Harrington will be hoping to add a second Irish Open title to his glittering CV when he heads to Royal County Down for the Irish Open Hosted by the Rory Foundation in May.

The 43 year old returned to the winners’ enclosure last week when he triumphed at the Honda Classic on the US PGA Tour, in doing so rising from 297th to 82nd in the Official World Golf Ranking.

The impressively clinical performance at PGA National in Florida was reminiscent of Harrington’s halcyon days of 2007, when he won the Irish Open at Adare Manor Hotel and Golf Resort shortly before a period of domination in the Majors, during which he claimed back-to-back Open Championships and the US PGA Championship in little more than a year.

The popular Irishman ended a 25-year wait for a home winner at Adare Manor when he beat Welshman Bradley Dredge in a play-off, which was a fitting result after several near-misses, including when he was joint runner-up in 2001 and 2004 and tied fifth in 2005.

Harrington added another runner-up finish in 2010, and in 2012, when the tournament was played in Northern Ireland – at Royal Portrush – for the first time in its long history, he was tied seventh.

Three years on and the Irish Open is heading back north of the border, and the 14-time European Tour winner is relishing making his competitive debut at Royal County Down from May 28-31.

“The Irish Open is my fifth Major and always one of the first events on my schedule, for obvious reasons,” said Harrington, who was the European Tour Number One in 2006. “Whilst it is always a special week for me, this year will be interesting as it’ll be the first time I’ve played at Royal County Down as a professional, so I’m really looking forward to getting there and seeing how the course has been set up.

“The last time the Irish Open was played in Northern Ireland, at Royal Portrush in 2012, it was a huge success and I was glad to be in the mix on the final day. The crowds were similar to a Major and generated a great atmosphere, and I’m sure it will be well attended again at Royal County Down.

“It’s great to see Rory involved and supporting the tournament, and it looks like it’ll be one of the strongest fields the Irish Open has ever had. It’s shaping up to be a great week and I look forward to being part of it.”

Harrington will be joined at Royal County Down by a star-studded field, including tournament host and World Number One Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia, Ernie Els, Lee Westwood, Rickie Fowler and defending champion Mikko Ilonen.

More than 80,000 spectators are expected and tens of thousands of tickets have already been sold for the event, which is supported by Tourism Northern Ireland.

McIlroy to Miss Honda Cut

Getty Images
Rory McIlroy is set to miss the cut at the Honda Classic after posting a four-over 74 in a rain-affected second round.

In a round twice interrupted by bad weather, McIlroy carded five bogeys and just one birdie to move to seven-over, four shots outside of the projected cut. Beginning the day three-over, the Northern Irishman opened with a bogey at the 10th and dropped another shot at the par-five 18th after finding the water with his second shot.

McIlroy missed birdie putts at two and three, before making his only gain of the round by firing his tee-shot at the par-three fifth to within five feet of the hole.

The 2012 winner on the Champion Course then found the bunker at successive holes to card back-to-back bogeys, and added another at the last after three-putting from 50-feet.

The 25-year-old had arrived at PGA National full of confidence after victory at last month's Dubai Desert Classic extended his run to seven top-two European Tour finishes in a row, and was expecting another good weekend in Florida despite an opening round 73.

"I don't like missing cuts," the world No 1 said. "You want to be playing on the weekend, and I'm not going to be playing which is not nice.

"I guess after coming off a three-week break, I felt, I wouldn't say rusty, but just not quite on top of my game yesterday. Today I felt like I was trying to get something going and couldn't.

"Coming off three weeks off and playing in conditions like these, it sort of shows you where your game's at. I've just got to regroup and put some work in and get ready for Miami next week."

Failing to qualify for the weekend ends a run of 22 consecutive cuts made on the PGA Tour for McIlroy, who hadn't missed a cut since last year's Irish Open and has reached the third round of every tournament he's featured at in America since the 2012 US Open.

McIlroy will continue his preparations for April's Masters at next week's World Golf Championships event at Doral, before making his first-ever start in the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill a fortnight later.
