McGeady Survives School Test

Attrition is the word most commonly used about European Tour Qualifying School and the Second Stage has again taken its toll this week in Spain, ending the hopes for next season for seven Irish golfers.

Only the one player earning a spot for the Final Stage next week at PGA Catalunya.

Niall Kearney the unexpected casualty after a one over par final round 72 saw the Dubliner drop 15 places and out of contention when he finished T21.

Having started the day in 4th place - and looking comfortable - it disappointingly proved insufficient for Kearney as those around him fired four and five under par rounds, leaving Kearney short sided at Lumine Golf and Beach Club.

Only the top 17 finishers at each venue and ties qualifying.

Kearney however earns Category 15 Membership of The European Tour for next season having finished within the top 25 places.

Michael McGeady enjoyed better news after clinching a share of fourteenth place after a final 70 - for a 3 under par overall at Campo Golf El Saler. The former Irish PGA Champion making the turn level and then picking up two shots on the home stretch to ensure his place inside the minimum mark.

Niall Turner signed for a 70 and moved up ten spots to a share 38th place at Las Colinas Golf and Country Club. But without making it any closer to full tour playing rights for 2015 on this occasion.

David Higgins carded a third round 70 for a share of 41st place and Mark Murphy dropped to 62nd after a final round 75. Both Waterville men left without full rights either.

Brendan McCarroll signed for 79 and share of 68th place.

Ruaidrhi McGee ended his campaign this year with a 68 and share of 51st place at Panoramica Golf and Sport Resort.

Gareth Shaw carded a 71 albeit with an improved position in 60th place.

Chris Paisley won his Second Stage event of The European Tour Qualifying School at Las Colinas Golf & Country Club with a five under par last day round of 66, which took the Englishman to 17 under in total. At the Spanish event, 18 players progressed.

Those 18 spaces where hotly contested and a four man playoff ensued for the remaining three spots when Englishman Matthew Cort, Dane Christian Gloet, Australian Geoffrey Drakeford and German Sebastian Heisele all finished in tied 16th position on seven under par.

Heisele and Gloet progressed in 16th and 17th place respectively, birdieing the second and third playoff holes, while it was Cort who missed out as Drakeford birdied the fourth playoff hole capturing the last qualifying spot in the process.

In the corresponding event at Panoramica Golf & Sport Resort, Englishman Matthew Southgate leapfrogged his compatriot Toby Tree with a five under par 65 to steal first place on 22 under par. However, again the real drama unfolded lower down the leaderboard on 13 under par as a sudden death six man playoff ensued for the remaining spaces.

After a tense battle, it was South African amateur Zander Lombard who took the 15th spot and Dane Jeff Winther the 16th. Gary Lockerbie then proceeded to hold his nerve to take the 17th place with a par three on the fifth playoff hole.

Elsewhere, Welshman Garry Houston stole the show at Campo de Golf El Saler, firing home in a seven under 65 to win the event.

But as with the other events, the real action came at the cut off for progression; Dane Daniel Løkke and Englishman Chris Lloyd hung on to take two of the last three qualifying places, where they were joined by Norwegian Espen Kofstad, who leapt up four positions to snatch qualification on two under par.

Meanwhile at the final event, Portuguese whiz Ricardo Gouveia completed his qualifying campaign with a rock steady level par 71 at Lumine Golf & Beach Club to stay at 18 under and advance on pole. A quartet of four players, consisting of France’s Guillaume Cambis, Englishmen Garrick Porteous and Nathan Kimsey and American Wes Homan, all shared the last progression spaces at nine under par.

Across the four venues, a total of 69 players qualified to the Final Stage where the top 25 players plus ties will earn their playing rights for The 2015 Race to Dubai.

Mixed Irish Grill on First Day QS

The first day of European Tour Qualifying School second stage teed off on Friday across four venues in Spain, with eight Irish hopefuls chasing the dream. Many of whom are now veterans of the annual tour school pilgrimage.

It is anticipated that there will be approximately 310 participants at 2nd Stage and around 80 (25%) will progress to the Final Stage. The exact number of qualifiers will be determined during the week of 2nd Stage.

At Las Colinas Golf and Country Club Niall Turner finished with a two over par 73, to hold a share of 65th place, and nine shots off the leader.

Campo de Golf El Saler saw Michael McGeady trail the first round leader by just four strokes after a round of 73 left the 2013 Irish PGA Champion in favourable 14th place.

Lumine Golf and Beach Club hosted four contenders in the mix with Niall Kearney the best of the Irish after a one under par 70 in T15.

David Higgins finished Friday in a share of 50th place with a first round of two over par along side fellow Waterville golfer Mark Murphy.

Brendan McCarroll saw his dream end early this year with an opening nine over par 79.

At Panoramica Golf and Sport Resort Ruaidhri McGee signed for a level par round - eight strokes off top of the eladerbiard - and more worrinbgly for him in a share of 52nd place.

Gareth Shaw was unable to match his exploits from last week in Oman on the Challenge Tour and crashed to a first round 79.

Archibald Walks in My Shoes at Mount Wolseley

PGA EuroPro Tour
Stuart Archibald won his first HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour title since 2011 with victory at the Walk In My Shoes Open at Mount Wolseley Hotel, Spa & Country Club in Co. Carlow, Ireland.

The Englishman carded a final round 69 to finish 14 under par, two clear of second placed Michael McGeady (North West Golf Club), who shot 66 for his final round on the par 72 course.

The victory is Archibald’s third win on the Tour and propels him to eighth on the Order of Merit, from which the top five at the end of the season earn a Challenge Tour card for 2014.

Archibald collected a winner’s cheque for £10,000, a brand new Motocaddy and Shotsaver range finder. However, following a bet with former European and PGA Tour player turned TV pundit John E. Morgan, the 30 year old must now also dye his beard blue.

“I wasn’t really sure about this week,” admitted Archibald. “I wasn’t sure how the course would play. It is quite firm and the greens are soft but we weren’t really sure if it was going to be a low scoring week, so when Watts went a bit crazy the first two days I was teeing off for my second round and thought it would be a struggle to catch him.

“My group for the second round managed to shoot a combined score of 20 under par, so we all carried each other through and that put me in a good position for the final round. I had a target in mind of 14 under and I thought that might get me there, and it proved the case.

“At dinner on Tuesday evening John Morgan was reminiscing and we shared stories. He told us all about how he had blue hair when he played PGA Tour, and he has been on about my beard all year long. He has told me not to shave it, to keep growing it.

“He said he would love to dye it, and I wasn’t so keen. But I told him if I won this week I would let him dye it any colour he wanted, and he went for blue. I have shot myself in the foot there so next week at Moor Allerton I will let John dye the beard blue.

“We have played in Ireland every year since I started playing the tour and we always get great support, so I want to thank everybody for that.”

Overnight leader Watts finished third on ten under after a final-round 71 and Billy Hemstock (Teignmouth Golf Club) and Richard Kilpatrick (Banbridge Golf Club) shared fourth on eight under.

Mark Murphy forced himself into contention with eight birdies on the front nine. However, a double at the tenth and a bogey at 11 saw him slip back and he signed for a final-round 66 (-6) with a birdie at 14 to finish the tournament seven under and tied sixth with four other golfers, including Nick McCarthy who shot 29 for his back nine to card a 65.

Highlights of the Walk In My Shoes Open, including more on John E. Morgan’s blue beard bet with Archibald, air on Sky Sports on Tuesday, August 12 with repeats the following day.

The HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour heads to Leeds next week for the Clipper Logistics Championship at Moor Allerton Golf Club.

Murphy Masters Second at Motocaddy

Mark Murphy carded a final-round 72 on the par 71 course of the PGA Europro Tour Motocaddy Masters last Friday, taking home a cheque for £3,750 and one of Motocaddy’s recently launched M1 Lite Push Trolleys.

Winner, Neil Chaudhuri, claimed his first professional title with victory in the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour’s Motocaddy Masters at The Carrick on Loch Lomond.

The Leicester golfer collects £10,000 and a brand new top-of-the-range Motocaddy M3 Pro after finishing eight under par for his 54 holes, four clear of his nearest challengers. Mark Murphy and two-time European Tour winner Bradley Dredge shared second on four under.

Chaudhuri (www.specialisteyes.co.uk) began the day one clear of Murphy on six under, and shot a final-round 69 for two under,

Dredge carded the best round of the day, a four-under 67 and takes home the same amount of £3,750 and a brand new Motocaddy S1 PRO. As Dredge and Murphy tied for second the Motocadd ytrollies were awarded based on Order of Merit position.

Winner Chaudhuri had led for most of the tournament and maintained control throughout the final round with birdies at 14 and 15 seeing him pull away from the challenge of Dredge, who carded a four-under final-round 67.

“It is my first win in nearly five years as a professional,” said Chaudhuri. “It means a lot because I really struggled for my first couple of years as a pro. I stuck at it and I feel really proud to have won today.

“I went to Qualifying School earlier in the year and only just got my card, so I felt lucky to be playing on the Tour this year. I have been improving week on week and it went pretty well this week.

“You have to avoid the bunkers here, they are so severe. I stuck to the same game plan all week and that was to go for accuracy.

“It is such a huge first prize to win £10,000 and that bumps you towards the top of the Order of Merit. A lot can change in a week. Ultimately I want to be on the European Tour and what we are all here for is to get onto the Challenge Tour and be one step away from the European Tour.”

Neil Fenwick (Dunbar Golf Club), James Maw (Rockliffe Hall) and Max Williams (Cuddington Golf Club) shared fourth on one under, while Nick McCarthy’s second-round 65 (-6) has been confirmed as a new course record at The Carrick.

Highlights of the Motocaddy Masters air on Sky Sports at 8pm on Tuesday, July 22 with repeats throughout the following day. The HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour stays in Scotland and moves to Royal Burgess in Edinburgh, with the three-day tournament running from Wednesday, July 23.

Murphy Revives QS Hopes

Mark Murphy shot a superb three-under-par 69 to propel himself into contention for a place in the second stage of European Tour qualifying at the Roxburghe in Scotland.

The Kerryman shares 14th place with a 54-hole aggregate of 217, one-over-par, and with only the top 17 and ties progressing to the second round in Spain next month, Murphy will need to shoot another solid round today if he is to make the grade.

Murphy's third-round score of 69 was seven strokes better than his opening-day 76, with the 33-year-old bagging four birdies along the way.

The Island's Paul Rawluk is also right in the mix as he too sits tied 14th after a level-par 72.

Rawluk had an eventful round, carding an eagle at the long par-five seventh hole where he knocked in a monster of a putt, as well as two birdies and four bogeys.

Cork's Peter O'Keeffe's chances of progressing were dealt a huge blow after he dropped from eighth to tied 29th after a disastrous 78.

Ballinasloe's Mark Staunton and Killarney's Daniel Sugrue shot rounds of 74 and 71 respectively, and are tied 47th and 51st place.

Sweden's Philip Eriksson and England's Jamie Moul share the lead on seven-under.
