Wasn't a Bad Round - Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy was satisfied with an opening 69 at the US PGA Championship despite his failure to build on a superb start at Oak Hill.

The defending champion admitted to watching videos of his record-breaking eight-shot victory at Kiawah Island last year to help inspire him to end a wretched run of form.

It looked like the tactic had paid off when he birdied three of the first four holes before coming up short with his approach to the fifth and spinning his ball back into water.

He limited the damage to a five and got the shot back at the ninth only to bogey the next two before being forced off the course for 70 minutes due to approaching storms.

The world No 3 returned to birdie the 12th, but he dropped another shot at 17 and did well to save par from eight feet at the last.

"I got off to a fast start but the bogeys on the 10th and 11th halted my momentum," said McIlroy, who is four shots behind leaders Jim Furyk and Adam Scott.

"I came back after the delay with a nice birdie on the 12th but the last four hole stretch is pretty tough. All things considered one under is not a bad score.

"I felt like I could shoot a low one, but that last four-hole stretch is tough. I didn't play it like I wanted but all things considered it wasn't a bad round."

Dave Helps Rory Take Stockton

Rory McIlroy hasn't enjoyed the best 2013 so far, failing to make the cut in the British andIrish Opens and losing his position as the World's No 1.

So perhaps in a bid to reverse his recent run of form, McIlroy has gone for a severe haircut as he prepares to defend his US PGA title at Oak Hill.

While his baseball cap was covering the severity of his cut, Rory looked like he meant business on the practice round this afternoon.

After a decent start at the Bridgestone Invitational at the weekend, he fell away and eventually finished in 27th place.

One of his own backroom team,Dave Stockton said that the Holywood star will have to 'work' harder to get back to the top of his game.

As McIlroy spoke more in hope than confidence of defending his US PGA title at Oak Hill, Stockton – one of his closest and most knowledgeable advisors – explained how the most naturally gifted golfer of his generation lost his Midas touch.

Two-time PGA champion Stockton is McIlroy's putting coach but also played a significant part in helping the 24-year-old break out of a form slump this time last year.

Stockton (71) said: "I just don't think he has worked."

The highly respected veteran suggested that the head-spinning changes in the young star's life as he rocketed to World No 1 made it difficult to strike the right balance in his career and devote enough time to playing tournaments and practice.

Asked if he thought it was inevitable for McIlroy to come down from the stellar highs of last year, Stockton replied: "I don't think so. I think he is still learning what he wants in life. That's my take on it.

"He has a girlfriend and all these things going on. Things happen, so okay, how do you adjust? I think his is more of a time (management) thing.

McGinley and Watson Play PGA

Paul McGinley will feature among six Irish players in the field for next week's PGA Championship at Oak Hill.

McGinley and his US Captain Tom Watson both have been invited to play the final Major of the season by the PGA of America, who also promote the Ryder Cup.

Ironically, the last time McGinley appeared in the Major Championship arena was at the 2009 Open at Turnberry, when Watson, then 59, famously went all the way to a play-off.

The Dubliner's best finish at the Majors was a share of sixth place at the 2004 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits.

Defending champion Rory McIlroy,Graeme McDowell, Darren Clarke,Shane Lowry and 2008 PGA Champion Padraig Harrington will also tee it up next week at Oak Hill, venue for the 2003 PGA and scene of Europe's 1995 Ryder Cup success. An event in which Philip Walton, now on the European Seniors Tour,  played such a decisive part.
