McIlroy Roars to Fargo Victory

Getty Images
Rory McIlroy overcame a nervy start to complete a record-breaking seven-shot victory at the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte.

McIlroy's overnight four-stroke lead was barely threatened throughout the final day at Quail Hollow as he fired a solid final-round 69 to become the first two-time winner of the event, and he also smashed Anthony Kim's previous tournament scoring record by five shots.

The world No 1 was the overwhelming favourite to emulate his breakthrough win in 2010 after his scintillating third-round 61 had given him a commanding lead, which was extended to five shots when playing-partner and nearest challenger Webb Simpson bogeyed the opening hole.

There was a glimmer of hope for Simpson and the field when McIlroy three-putted the second green, and Simpson rolled in a good putt for a birdie to shave the deficit to three.

But Simpson dropped another shot at the next and, after matching McIlroy's cast-iron birdie at the long fifth, the American three-putted from inside six feet at the sixth for a double-bogey.

Both birdied the seventh, and Patrick Rodgers then emerged as McIlroy's biggest threat when he made three birdies in five holes to cap an outward 34, and he then followed with an eagle at 10 and another birdie at the 11th.

Rodgers then reached 17 under with further birdies at 14 and 15 that hauled him within three of the leader, but his hopes of pulling off a huge upset vanished when he found water off the tee at the treacherous 17th.

McIlroy faltered on the greens for the first time in the week, but he still managed to pick up shots at the 12th and 14th before turning on the style at the 508-yard 16th, where he smashed a 364-yard yard drive over the corner of the dogleg and clipped a gap wedge to 18 inches for a tap-in three.

The 26-year-old dropped a shot at 17 after a poor pitch from right of the green, but it scarcely mattered as he walked to the final tee armed with a seven-shot lead when Rodgers bogeyed the last to finish on 14 under.

Simpson managed to salvage a 72 as he played the fearsome Green Mile in three pars to earn a share of second with Rodgers, leaving the stage clear for McIlroy to roll in a confident putt for par to finish on a remarkable 21 under par and claim the 11th PGA Tour title of his career.

Phil Mickelson briefly got into the mix as he made three straight birdies on the front nine and added another at the 10th to claim a share of second on 12 under, but he then bogeyed the next two holes.

The left-hander rallied with birdies at 13 and 15 as he returned a 68 to finish in a tie for fourth alongside Gary Woodland (67) and Robert Streb (71).

McIlroy Shoots 67 at Quail

Getty Images
Rory McIlroy’s finished his second round at the Wells Fargo Championship signing for a 67 on seven under par overall.

A poor pitch at the par 5 looked to have left him too much to do on the green but he rattled home from 30 feet - further proof that the work he did on his putting with Dave Stockton in the last few days is paying off.

On Friday the four-time major winner was in full flow and looked determined to take the tournament by the scruff of the neck going into the weekend.

When his drive at the 14th ran through the green 345 yards away minds were beginning to wander towards the possibility of the Northern Irishman breaking his own course record of 62 at the North Carolina resort.

However a sloppy chip left him with too much to do for birdie and an excellent chance of going three under par after five holes was squandered.

That missed opportunity perhaps played a part in McIlroy’s deceleration as he only managed one birdie in the next eight holes.

That trend was broken with a birdie at the fifth, his 14th, before another typically glorious drive was only stopped from crawling onto the green at the par 4 eighth by the front bunker.

From there a controlled splash shot to four feet was enough to claim another birdie before a par at the ninth saw him sign for a 67.

McIlroy’s round was somewhat less eventful than that of tournament leader Martin Flores.

The world number 248 finished third at Quail Hollow last year and this year’s performance is certainly appeasing the notion that certain golf courses just suit certain players.

Flores has missed four of his last six cuts but that poor form has been exorcised by the fairways and greens of Quail Hollow as eight birdies and three bogies eventually resulted in a 67 that catapulted him to the top of the leaderboard.

He is joined at the summit by American compatriot Patrick Rodgers who is eight under par with three holes to play.

Patrick Reed slipped back down the leaderboard during the second round, thanks to a two over par round of 74.

Harrington Hunting at Sanderson Farms

Padraig Harrington finished five strokes off the pace in the Sanderson Farms Championship,Country Club of Jackson, in a group of 17 players who shot 70 in their first rounds.

The three time major winner continues his bid to move up the world rankings as 40 of the world’s top 50 players are contesting the WGC-HSBC Champions event in Shanghai. Currently being led by Graeme McDowell.

The world number 340 Harrington is one of nine former Major champions in the field at Jackson Country Club in Mississippi

Harrington, who reached a career-high third in the world six months after winning his third Major title in the 2008 US PGA Championship bust has since lost his Tour card and is playing on invitations.

Sebastian Cappelen leads after carding a seven under par 65 for the outright lead.

With 40 of the World’s top 50 players competing at the WGC-HSBC Champions event in Shanghai, it was expected that one of the nine former champions in the field would make their mark, but it is the 24-year-old who is setting the pace. Cappelen began with a bogey, but made eight birdies, shooting five under on the front nine and finished with a tricky par to finish two clear of the rest.

“I’m so happy, I couldn’t be happier,” Cappelen, told the Golf Channel.

“I came here just trying to get a new experience, trying to get a feel for how it feels to play on the real tour.

“I had a great time out there today and hit a lot of great shots. It was fun. I’ll try to just keep that going, take that with me into tomorrow.”

American pair Robert Streb and Scott Pinckney as well as Canadian Nick Taylor are on five under, with Streb’s bogey at the last a frustrating end to what had been up to then, a blemish-free round. Pinckney dropped shots at eight and 17, following birdies from 14 through 16, while Taylor did not register a bogey.

Nine players, including David Duval and Ben Curtis are a further shot back on four under par, while defending champion Woody Austin shot a 70.

Harrington in PGA Tour Battle at Sea Island

Getty Images
Pádraig Harrington competes this week at the McGladrey Classic at Sea Island thanks to a sponsor’s exemption, having lost his PGA tour card. The Dubliner aims to win sufficient money to earn back US privileges.

Harrington still also has the fallback of using a one-off season’s exemption for being in the top-50 all-time money winners on the PGA Tour if that doesn’t work.

Local hero Chris Kirk is preparing to defend his title at the McGladrey Classic as thePGA Tour heads to Georgia.

The 29-year-old, who beat Briny Baird by just one shot on the Sea Island Course last year, has lived nearby at St Simons Island for six years and approaches this weekend’s tournament in high spirits.

Kirk claimed his third PGA Tour triumph at September’s Deutsche Bank Championship and finished fourth in the Tour Championship.

Tournament host Davis Love III, US Ryder Cup duo Zach Johnson and Matt Kucharand five-time Tour winner Jonathan Byrd are among those expected to challenge Kirk, while Webb Simpson has good form in Brunswick.

His three previous visits have yielded 12th, second and seventh-placed finishes and the 29-year-old recently tied for fourth at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas.

Another strong contender will be rookie Tony Finau.

The Utah-born player, who turned professional in 2007, is enjoying a breakthrough season having tied for 12th at the Frys.com Open before claiming a share of seventh place in Las Vegas last week. And will be suitably reluctant to rest on his laurels at Sea Island.

“I think my confidence on the golf course is pretty high,” he added. “I’m coming off a couple of nice finishes.

“But you know, I definitely don’t feel like I’m getting comfortable or complacent or anything.”

Harrington Hits Houston 69

Getty Images
Padraig Harrington kept his hopes of qualifying for next week’s US Masters alive with an opening 69 in the Shell Houston Open.

Harrington has to win on Sunday to avoid missing out on a trip to Augusta for the first time since 1999 and got off to an encouraging start at the Golf Club of Houston.

The 42-year-old Dubliner started on the 10th and holed from eight feet for an opening birdie before picking up another shot on the par-five 13th.

Harrington dropped a shot on the next after failing to get up and down from a greenside bunker but quickly made amends with birdies on the 17th and 18th to reach the turn in 33.

A three-putt bogey on the third halted the former Ryder Cup star’s momentum, but birdies on the fourth and sixth had him high on the leaderboard before a disappointing bogey on the ninth, his final hole.

At three under par, Harrington — whose last victory on a major tour came in the 2008 US PGA Championship — was three shots behind early clubhouse leaders Keegan Bradley and Matt Kuchar.

Bradley, who won the US PGA in 2011, carded six birdies in a flawless 66 that was matched by Kuchar in the group behind, the world number 11 missing from seven feet for birdie on his final hole to take the outright lead.

Bradley’s playing partners Webb Simpson and Phil Mickelson were also off to a good start, the pair returning rounds of 68 to join South African Ernie Els on four under par.

Open champion Mickelson had been a doubt for the event with a pulled muscle which forced him out of the Valero Texas Open last week, but the left-hander showed no ill effects as he carded four birdies and no bogeys.

Els looked set to finish five under but dropped his only shot of the day on the 18th after twice finding sand.

Sweden’s Henrik Stenson, who can replace the injured Tiger Woods as world number one with a victory in Houston, was five off the lead after a one-under-par 71.

Rory McIlroy was off to a promising start with three birdies and no bogeys in his opening ten holes and it could have been even better as he missed good chances at the opening three holes.

Darren Clarke was three over after his front nine.

McDowell Makes More Magic

Graeme McDowell came from behind once again to reach the WGC World Match Play quarter-finals with a win over Hunter Mahan after 21 holes.

The Northern Irishman fought back from two down with two holes to play before beating Mahan on the third extra hole.

He will now face France's Victor Dubuisson, who beat Bubba Watson, in the last eight.

McDowell won the last two holes against Mahan to square the match and, after saving par on the second extra hole, won it with a birdie on the third.

He came from three down with three to play to beat Gary Woodland in round one and came back from two holes behind on the 14th to win on the final green against Hideki Matsuyama.

McDowell, whose win over Mahan sealed the 2010 Ryder Cup for Europe, said: "It's entertaining but I'd rather have it easier, believe me.

"I was sure I was beaten against Gary Woodland and walking off the 16th I thought I was beaten again.

"I've just robbed three players at this tournament and I can't believe I'm still in it."

Oosthuizen powered past Webb Simpson 5&4 and he will meet Australian Day, who George Coetzee 3&1.

Els beat Jason Dufner on the final hole and Spieth beat fellow American Matt Kuchar 2&1.

After overcoming Harris English, Furyk meets Fowler, who beat Sergio Garcia on the final hole.

Garcia pulled off a surprise on the seventh hole when he conceded a 20-foot par putt to Fowler when the Spaniard, who had a four-footer for par, had a chance to move three holes ahead.

Fowler won the match with a birdie on the last but Garcia, who felt he had held play up as he waited for a drop on the sixth, insisted he was not sorry for halving the seventh.

"I don't regret it at all. He played better on the last 10 holes and deserved it. It's a gentleman's game and lately it hasn't felt like that.

"This is the way I was brought up playing golf by my dad. It was the only thing I could do to make myself feel better [after the sixth]."

Clarke Trails Leading Duo

Getty Images
Darren Clarke carded a one under par first round 69 at the McGladrey Classic in Georgia on Thursday, to remain six strokes off the leaders Briny Baird and Brian.

The duo both fired opening-round 63's to sit seven under after fog had delayed play by almost two hours in the morning.

Former US Open champion Webb Simpson was one of three players two shots back alongside fellow American Kevin Kisner and South Korean Seung-yul Noh.

Baird has not recorded a win in his previous 364 appearances on Tour but could break that duck this week after a stunning start at Sea Island.

The 41-year-old recorded a flawless round as he birdied the second, third and fourth holes before hitting another hot streak at the end of his day with further birdies at 14, 15, 16 and 17.

Gay did have a blemish on his card as he dropped a shot on the 12th but he countered that with eight birdies in calm conditions.

Simpson, Noh and Kisner were two behind after firing rounds of 65 and there was a large group behind them on four under including Jonathan Byrd andCamilo Villegas.

Will MacKenzie was the best of the afternoon starters as he sat four under after six holes with former Masters champion Trevor Immelman a further shot back through eight.

Major champions YE Yang, Retief Goosen and Ben Curtis were all on two under having completed their rounds while defending champion Tommy Gainey was level par through four holes.
