Rory Undecided About Rio

Getty Images
Rory McIlroy says he is still undecided about which country to represent at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

The decision has caused a huge amount of debate, but the golfer says he has plenty of time to mull it over before deciding to choose either Ireland or Britain.

“I haven’t made a decision yet,” McIlroy told the US PGA Tour website.

”There’s no real urgency at the moment, and I couldn’t even imagine planning my schedule that far ahead. I will have to decide, however, and take into consideration many sensibilities.”

For the first time since 1904, golfers will compete for Olympic gold but that brings the tricky question of nationality into play because Northern Ireland does not field its own team.

For fellow Northern Ireland native Graeme McDowell, the decision is already been made.

McDowell played for Ireland at last year’s World Cup of Golf which locked him into representing Ireland in Rio de Janeiro in two years time.

The world number eight also admitted he spent more time dealing with lawyers last year than he hopes to for the rest of his career, but feels he was right to leave both of his previous management companies.

"I'm not sure if regret is the right term for management changes," added McIlroy, who is still embroiled in a legal dispute with Horizon Sports. "I saw my future differently in each case and decided accordingly.

"Management teams often have to consider other players in their camp when decisions are being made, and I think I outgrew that. I won't pretend everything in the future will be smooth sailing because obstacles will always present themselves and there will be highs and lows.

"Now that the decisions rest with me, though, I'll have to take the poor ones on the chin."

Seven of the world's top 10 are in the field at PGA National, with Tiger Woods, Adam Scott and Phil Mickelson returned to action after opting to miss last week's match play event in Arizona.

McIlroy Chases History Maker

Getty Images
Rory McIlroy kept his challenge on track at the Emirates Australian Open with consecutive birdies on the 13th and 14th holes of Royal Sydney Golf Club to finish with a two under par 70.
Having slipped down as low as 9-under, McIlroy is back to 12-under the card reducing Adam Scott’s lead to four shots, who finished in 68 strokes.

However  playing partner on day three, Adam Scott, is still on the verge of making history like no other Australian golfer has ever before and is just over 24 hours away from attempting to claim the rare Australian golf Triple Crown, Scott also has the opportunity to go one better – and take out the PGA Tour of Australasia’s Order of Merit in the same year.

In 2005 at age 34 Robert Allenby became the first person to claim the illustrious Triple Crown, however didn't meet minimum eligibility criteria for the Order of Merit title.

As such the PGA Tour of Australasia’s 2005 moneylist was taken out by a young up-and-coming Queensland Professional; Adam Scott.

“What Adam has already achieved over the last four weeks is remarkable,” said Brian Thorburn, Chief Executive Officer of the PGA of Australia referring to not only his Australian PGA and Masters wins but also his World Cup of Golf title.

“It’s already been a history-making year for the US Masters champion and tomorrow Adam has another chance to do what no other person has ever done.”

“On behalf of all of Adam’s fellow PGA and PGA Tour of Australasia Members I wish him the best of luck.”

Already leading the 2013 PGA Tour of Australasia moneylist, 33-year-old Scott is now a certainty to take home the Norman Von Nida Order of Merit Medal with his nearest rival missing the cut at Royal Sydney.

With the Order of Merit title, Scott will also move to within the top 10 of the PGA Tour of Australasia’s Career Moneylist, currently led by Peter Senior.

Defending Emirates Australian Open champion Peter Senior took out last year’s Norman Von Nida Order of Merit Medal, with Greg Chalmers claiming the top spot in 2011 courtesy of his two wins at the Australian PGA Championship and the Australian Open.

Other winners of the prestigious title include Geoff Ogilvy (2010), Craig Parry (1995, 2002,2007), Robert Allenby (1992 and 1994), Greg Norman (1978, 1980, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1988) and Jack Newton (1979.)

Ireland Duo Trail in Melbourne

Graeme McDowell carded a one-over par 72 at the World Cup of Golf with double-bogeys on the sixth and 18th undoing a long-range chip for an eagle on the par-four ninth at Royal Melbourne.

Shane Lowry came home in 75 strokes.

Kevin Streelman of the United States and Denmark's Thomas Bjorn share the lead after the opening round of the World Cup at Royal Melbourne.

Streelman led the way for the Americans with a five-under-par 66 which featured five birdies on the back nine before two late bogeys checked his charge.

His team-mate Matt Kuchar could only manage a level-par 71 after four bogeys on the back nine.

Streelman said: "I made some good birdie putts today and some par saves as well, so pretty happy. It's just an incredible golf course, I love it. I just had a lot of fun there to be honest."

Bjorn also started strongly with a 66 as his team-mate Thorbjorn Olesen matched Kuchar's 71.

Bjorn had a poor start to his day, four-putting the fourth hole for a double-bogey six, but made a fine recovery.

He said: "I thought, 'Well, this could be a long day,' but I just kind of kept my composure and made some good birdies and kept playing solid. It is, in my eyes, probably the finest golf course you can ever play."
Portugal third

Portugal are in third place in the team event on two under - three behind both Denmark and defending champions USA - while in the individual standings third place is tied between South Korea's KJ Choi, Martin Laird of Scotland and Stuart Manley of Wales on four under.

Laird's compatriot Stephen Gallacher could only manage a 74, while English duo Danny Willett and Chris Wood opened with scores of 69 and 75 respectively.

Manley is playing as one of eight individuals in the 60-player field after Jamie Donaldson withdrew with a back injury.

In-form Australian Adam Scott, who has won the Australian PGA and Australian Masters over the past two weeks, had a quintuple-bogey nine on the 12th as he carded a 75.

Scott's compatriot Jason Day shot a solid 68 to be two off the pace, alone on three under.

Day, grieving the loss of eight relatives in the Philippines who were killed in Typhoon Haiyan, rolled in five birdies and two bogeys in his first round in five weeks.

World number two and U.S. Masters champion Scott and world number 16 Jason Day will lead the strong Australian contingent on the Rose Bay layout.

“It’s a very special year for Australian golf and it’s great to see Sydney host this world-class event," said New South Wales Minister for Tourism and Major Events, George Souris.

“It’s also an exciting time for the next generation -- players like Jason Day -- who are bidding for their first Emirates Australian Open victory at the end of next month in Sydney. We’re looking forward to a fantastic championship and have no doubt the crowds will be out in force to see world-class golf.”

Rory McIlroy's contract to play the Australian Open in Sydney the following week precludes him from playing outside New South Wales this year, so he was unavailable.
