Higgins Keeps PGA in the Family

David Higgins - Getty Images
David Higgins crowned an all conquering year in the Irish PGA region by capturing the Irish PGA champioship at Mount Juliet and underlined his ranking as the number one player on the circuit.

He beat 22 year-old assistant professional Noel Murray from Massereene by birdieing the third hole (the par 5 17th) with an immaculate pitch from 87 yards to two feet.

Kilkenny native Gary Murphy also made the sudden death play-off with all three finishing on seven under par for the reduced 54 hole event, but he dropped out after he parred the first hole(17th) to birdie by the other pair.

The pair then halved the second tie hole (18th) in par and returned to the 17th where Murray made a marvellous attempt at birdie, his sand shot rimming the hole after he hit his difficult pitch into sand.

The 39 year-old winner from Waterville, who fired a best of the day final round of five-under-par 67 to reach the play-off, said it was the fulfillment of a boyhood dream to lift the trophy that his father Liam lifted in 1983.

"I remember looking at the trophy as a young lad and saying it would be lovely to win it.I tried for a long time to win it and did it today and I'm just delighted."

But he took time to salute his fearless young rival Murray. "He's one for the future. Keep an eye out for him."

There was a two hour delay at the start of the day due to frost and fog.

Martin leads PGA at Mount Juliet

Peter Martin from the Colin Park Golf Academy in Belfast leads the Irish PGA championship with a five-under-par 67 after the first round at Mount Juliet.

He is two shots ahead of Eamon Brady (Clontarf), John Kelly ( St Margaret's) and Barrie Trainor ( Mayobridge), with David Higgins who is on the verge of being crowned the Order of Merit winner among a group of seven a shot further back.

The event which was due to be played over 72 holes has been cut back to 54 with an early morning deluge of rain causing thee cancellation of the first round on Thursday

The rain returned yesterday afternoon when the leader was out in the worst of the heavy showers but managed three birdies on his first nine which was the back nine, but had a disappointing bogey on the par5 17th, only to notch another three birdies on his homeward nine.

He said he drew inspiration from the play of his two playing partners, the Order of Merit leader and former Ryder Cup star Philip Walton, who carded level par 72.

Mt Juliet Hosts Irish Championship

One of Ireland's best known golf resorts Mount Juliet is set to play host to this year's Irish Championship.

Mount Juliet will stage the climax to the season from October 11-14 when it brings down the curtain on the year.

A 102-strong field will contest the prestigious Championship which has more than 100 years of history and has been won by some of Ireland's greatest golfers including Fred Daly, Harry Bradshaw, Christy O'Connor Senior, Eamonn Darcy, Des Smyth, Padraig Harrington, Darren Clarke, Paul McGinley and Philip Walton.

Organisers are expecting another strong entry for the Tournament which was won by Simon Thornton who is playing on the European Tour this season.

Irish regional secretary Michael McCumiskey said:'' Mount Juliet is regarded as one of the best golf resorts in the world and we are delighted they are hosting the Irish PGA Championship in 2012.''

Mount Juliet boasts a rich tournament history and was the venue for the Irish Open from 1993 to 1995 and also staged two World Golf Championships where Tiger Woods and Ernie Els triumphed.

McCumiskey added: '' Mount Juliet always has the golf course in pristine condition and is evidenced by the many golfers who visit there every year. We look forward to staging another successful Championship.''

Because of the numbers who wish to play in the event it is necessary to stage qualifying rounds, and they will be staged at Mount Juliet on September 4th and 25th.

Check Out 3 Club Pass

Three of the country's leading golf clubs – Waterford Castle, Faithlegg, and Mount Juliet - have combined to offer exceptional value to golfers as the season gets in to full swing. The now established and original Three Club Golf Pass will allow holders to play one full round of golf on each of the three championship courses. The pass is priced at just €123 with a weekend rate supplement (this may differ per club).

The pass, the original and market leader, offers a significant saving to golfers visiting the region and is also designed to appeal to regular golfers in the south-east who are not members of the three clubs involved but who wish to sample their excellent courses. According to Gary Breen of South East Tourism, who are helping to promote the pass in overseas markets, it is vital that clubs such as the three involved in the pass work together.

"It is now more crucial than ever that service providers look at the situation afresh and strive to offer real value-for-money. In this instance, it is particularly significant to see three competing clubs uniting to develop and market a pass which allows golfers visiting the region to play three exceptional courses in their own time at a very reasonable price."

"Our marketing of the pass will be focused on areas of the UK where awareness already exists among many golfers of what is on offer in the superb golfing triangle created by Faithlegg, Mount Juliet and Waterford Castle. The current sterling-euro exchange rate makes this pass especially appealing to golfers originating in Wales and Northern Ireland while I know that many Irish golf societies and individuals will also be attracted by the great value on offer while the passes will also interest those buying corporate gifts."

Waterford Castle
A unique island golf course surrounded by the River Suir and accessed from Ballinakill in Waterford city by private ferry, Waterford Castle opened in 1992 and was designed by Des Smyth. The superbly-located course set on an historic island has water features on the second, third, fourth and sixteenth holes.

As Des Smyth himself commented after he first viewed the site in 1988, "The Island has a natural undulating landscape with mature forestation and beautiful views of the river. To develop a golf course there was a natural decision for anyone with a keen love of the game."

Faithlegg
Opened in May 1993, Faithlegg was designed by renowned Irish golf architect Patrick Merrigan and boasts a superb setting on the banks of the River Suir in east county Waterford with the course taking full advantage of a wonderful landscape of mature trees, flowing parkland and lakes.

At a championship yardage of 6,674 and a regular yardage from the white markers of 6,284, distance is rarely the main problem for those seeking to card a good score there. Rather, the perils of the course lie in its clever layout and slick, often wickedly contoured greens. (www.faithlegg.ie)

Mount Juliet
Created by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 1991, the course at Mount Juliet is synonymous with golfing excellence and has played host to the world's leading golfers including Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Davis Love III and Vijay Singh, along with countless others, including Ireland's Pádraig Harrington and Darren Clarke.

The layout certainly delivers on the promises made by Nicklaus when he first explored the rich pastures near Thomastown, Co Kilkenny and exclaimed, "I think Mount Juliet gets high marks…It's just a beautiful piece of property on which to build a golf course." (www.mountjuliet.com)

The 3 Day Golf Pass is available from Golf Reception – contact 051 871633 or email golf@waterfordcastle.com. (Vouchers will be available from November 2008)
2 Club Golf Pass €75

Should you not have the time to avail of the 3 Club Pass then the 2 Club pass is for you. Exceptional value @ €75.00 to include golf at Waterford Castle and Faithlegg €15.00 supplement for each course if used on weekends. These two courses offer an enjoyable yet challenging test for golf, particularly Faithlegg where it's undulating greens will test anyone's short game.

Mount Juliet Wins Ranking

Backspin Magazine which focuses on the Irish Golf Market has introduced an Irish Course Rankings Poll.

The magazine took an unusual approach to their first Irish Golf Course Rankings in that they ranked the quality and variety of Ireland's Links and Parkland courses separately. A panel of 52 professional and amateur golfers joined by members of the Irish Golfing Media were asked to nominate their favourite courses in both categories. courses that impress and delight the most in order of preference.

We are pleased to announce that Mount Juliet Golf Course achieved poll position Number One in the Parkland/Inland Top 40 golf courses in Ireland and are delighted to have won this prestigious award particularly as it is the first time Backspin has carried out such a poll.

We congratulate Royal County Down who achieved poll position number 1 in the Links / Shoreline Top 30 golf courses in Ireland and wish to thank Backspin magazine for the honour bestowed on Mount Juliet.
