Lawrie Rediscovers Fizz

Peter Lawrie can trace his poor performances directly to taking up a fitness regimen that included cutting Coca-Cola out of his diet in mid-2013. The effect on his golf game proving dramatic and costing his automatic laying rights on the European Tour.

Which he had held almost without fail since turning professional in 1997.

“I was addicted to it and I tried to stop it,” Lawrie told Newstalk "I was drinking litres of the stuff. Even in the hottest countries, like Malaysia, I would have Coke on the golf course, because I was addicted to it.”

“I went from such a high on sugar to a dramatic low,” he continued. “And I never recovered from it. I really didn’t. That was the one thing. I know this might shock people, but I lost all confidence in myself. I wouldn’t say I went for a breakdown, but I got exceptionally emotional at the end of that year and some of last year, as well. It was just very difficult to deal with all of the situations that were coming at me. Whether that had anything to do with my mental state in any shape or form, I have no idea.”

Lawrie explained that he is now on Coke again.

A factor that has coincided with newly found form in Kuala Lumpur last week when he fired a second round 66 at the Maybank Malysian Open - and a top twenty finish. A result which sees him currently sit 73rd in the Race to Dubai.

Dizzy heights for the Dubliner accustomed the past two seasons to being outside the top 100 - and chasing salvation at the season ending Perth International Open two years running.

Unfortunately failing last year and having to survive this year on sponsor invites.

“When you go through what I went through for the last 20-odd months, you have to look at every situation that you’ve been in and you think, ‘How did I get here?’ I’d spent the last five years as a consistent top-60 in the European Tour Order of Merit. I was exceptionally consistent. Then all of a sudden, I couldn’t even come close to making a cut.

“It just didn’t work. I don’t know whether it triggered something in my brain or whatever, but I wasn’t the same Peter Lawrie when I did it.”

“It’s been a long time coming, I have to admit. I’ve been in the doldrums for the last 20-odd months since the Irish Open 2013 so it’s been a long wait. Hopefully, I can keep it up there,”
“It’s tough this year, being on sponsors' invites the whole time. You’re writing begging letters, being a sole trader that I am, not with a big management group so it’s difficult but I’ll keep trying. When I get the opportunities it’s great to play well.”

Harrington's Last Word on Cancer Scare

Padraig Harrington has spoken out about a recent cancer scare after under going surgery for sun spots. The three-time major winner lost his father Paddy to oesophageal cancer in 2005.

The Dubliner was on Today FM's 'The Last Word' this week and explained: "I've had a number of skin cancers removed off my face. When you get a symptom don't ignore it. Do something about it."

The father-of-two spoke out to raise awareness as he is also patron of the Oesophageal Cancer Fund Ireland.

Padraig said he hoped by talking about his own experience, he would further raise awareness for Lollipop Day which takes place next week.

"Dealing with cancer is not what it was 10 years ago.

"Instead of just one treatment they are now looking at combining different types of treatment of dealing with oesophageal cancer.

"Everybody responds differently to treatment and ways of treating cancer are moving on. I see that we when I travel the world.

"It is easier to clear these things up at the start rather than waiting until there is a problem.

"You can get treated and go on to live a much longer life," he said.

"My father had symptoms but didn't do anything about it. It's the nature of men in Ireland and certainly older men.

"I would be much more inclined to go and do something about it.

"If I get a pain I go and get it checked out. It's a little bit of hardship [going to the doctor] but you will feel much better afterwards."

It's Just Bill and Rory

Twitter/BillClinton
It was Mr Clinton's first visit to Ireland in more than two years and which saw him deliver the Ray Murphy Memorial lecture at the Conrad Hotel, after a meeting at Government buildings with Taoiseach Enda Kenny earlier in the day.

But Mr Clinton also found time to enjoy a round of golf with Roy McIlroy, with the former president even tweeting a picture as he commended the “great work of the Rory Foundation”, which supports children’s charities globally.

Later McIlroy revealed what happened on the green during an interview with Newstalk’s ‘Off the Ball’ programme.

“Anything inside six feet, it’s ‘Mr President, pick that up’,” said McIlroy.

“He is fond of dropping another ball or two and taking a few Mulligans – but you don’t call him on that.

“He loves his golf. He’s a decent player. He probably plays to around a 14 handicap,” said McIlroy.

Lowry Challenges Newstalk

To launch Newstalk’s official sponsorship of the Irish Open 2013, which takes place from 27-30 June at Carton House, Co. Kildare, former champion Shane Lowry challenged Newstalk presenters to a unique putting challenge in Dublin City Centre.

Ger Gilroy, Dave McIntyre, Joe Molloy and Jonathan Healy tried their luck against Lowry – who won the Irish Open spectacularly as an amateur in 2009 - on a specially built putting green in Dublin’s South King Street in front of an enthusiastic crowd who attempted a putt for themselves.

Speaking at the challenge, Ger Gilroy of Newstalk said, “We are delighted to be an official sponsor of The Irish Open 2013 and it is fantastic to have Shane Lowry here to take part in the putting challenge.

“Shane is a superb advocate for Irish golf and we wish him the best of luck in this year’s championship. We are thoroughly looking forward to what will no doubt be an exciting few days of golf in Carton House in two weeks time.”

Lowry, from Clara, Co Offaly, will be playing in his home club, Carton House, in two weeks time where he will be challenging for the Irish Open title along with Major Champions Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy as well as 2014 Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley

In May 2009 Lowry won the Irish Open as an amateur, defeating Robert Rock on the third hole of a sudden-death play-off. He was just the third amateur to win in the history of The European Tour and turned professional one week later.

James Finnigan, Commercial Director for the Irish Open, welcomed the Tour’s exciting new partnership with Newstalk, which commands a large sports following in Ireland.

He said: “It has been a tremendous way to mark the sponsorship agreement between Newstalk and the Irish Open. Shane is a really popular player and it was great to listen to his interviews with the Newstalk presenters on air at such a superb city centre venue.

“The Newstalk listeners will also benefit hugely, not only from the ticket competition associated with Shane’s putts today, but through a separate competition whereby listeners get the chance to play in the Pro-Am event prior to the Irish Open on June 26.

“This has been a spectacular launch in Dublin and all of us on The European Tour thank Shane for being such as great sport and to wish him well for his bid to win the Irish Open, this time as a professional at a place he calls home.”

Newstalk will be broadcasting live from the Irish Open at Carton House on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th June 2013. For further information on Newstalk’s coverage of The Irish Open go to www.newstalk.ie.
