To launch Newstalk’s official sponsorship of the Irish Open 2013, which takes place from 27-30 June at Carton House, Co. Kildare, former champion Shane Lowry challenged Newstalk presenters to a unique putting challenge in Dublin City Centre.
Ger Gilroy, Dave McIntyre, Joe Molloy and Jonathan Healy tried their luck against Lowry – who won the Irish Open spectacularly as an amateur in 2009 - on a specially built putting green in Dublin’s South King Street in front of an enthusiastic crowd who attempted a putt for themselves.
Speaking at the challenge, Ger Gilroy of Newstalk said, “We are delighted to be an official sponsor of The Irish Open 2013 and it is fantastic to have Shane Lowry here to take part in the putting challenge.
“Shane is a superb advocate for Irish golf and we wish him the best of luck in this year’s championship. We are thoroughly looking forward to what will no doubt be an exciting few days of golf in Carton House in two weeks time.”
Lowry, from Clara, Co Offaly, will be playing in his home club, Carton House, in two weeks time where he will be challenging for the Irish Open title along with Major Champions Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy as well as 2014 Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley.
In May 2009 Lowry won the Irish Open as an amateur, defeating Robert Rock on the third hole of a sudden-death play-off. He was just the third amateur to win in the history of The European Tour and turned professional one week later.
James Finnigan, Commercial Director for the Irish Open, welcomed the Tour’s exciting new partnership with Newstalk, which commands a large sports following in Ireland.
He said: “It has been a tremendous way to mark the sponsorship agreement between Newstalk and the Irish Open. Shane is a really popular player and it was great to listen to his interviews with the Newstalk presenters on air at such a superb city centre venue.
“The Newstalk listeners will also benefit hugely, not only from the ticket competition associated with Shane’s putts today, but through a separate competition whereby listeners get the chance to play in the Pro-Am event prior to the Irish Open on June 26.
“This has been a spectacular launch in Dublin and all of us on The European Tour thank Shane for being such as great sport and to wish him well for his bid to win the Irish Open, this time as a professional at a place he calls home.”
