DPWTC Set for Sunday Showdown

Getty Images
The DP World Tour Championship looks set for a fitting finale with World Number One Rory McIlroy and World Number Two Luke Donald going head-to-head on Sunday.

England’s Donald extended his bogey free run at Jumeirah Golf Estates’ Earth Course to 100 holes with his 66 – the last time he dropped a shot at this venue coming at the eighth hole in the second round a year ago – as he reached 17 under par.

While that was enough to shake off the remainder of the field, McIlroy was able to keep pace with 66 that started with a bogey at the first but was followed by five birdies and an eagle at the long 14th.The chasing pack is headed by South African Major Champions Charl Schwartzel and Louis Oosthuizen on 14 under, with four-time European Tour winner Branden Grace and Dutchman Joost Luiten two shots further back.

But it is the final group on the final day of The European Tour season that will provide the talking point as the two best players on the planet fight for the €1,041,429 winner's cheque with their contrasting styles. While Donald has pummelled most of the field into submission with his unerring consistency – Jesper Parnevik in 1995 was the last player to win an event without a bogey - McIlroy found on the back nine the sort of inspiration reserved only for the game’s greats.

Everybody else looks too far back given the pedigree of the leaders.

Told of his century of holes without a bogey Donald said: "I'm not sure I can believe that.

"That's pretty good. I guess that's my style - I don't make too many mistakes.

"It's going to be fun - great for the crowd and everyone watching around the world.

"Hopefully we can make some birdies."

Donald played the front nine much the better, a four-birdie 32 compared to McIlroy's 35 which contained an opening bogey after he drove into a bunker, but then birdies at the third and sixth.

It was on the inward half that the 23 year old has really prospered all week, though, and after picking up more shots on the 11th and 12th he found the green in two at the long 14th and holed an eagle putt of around 30 feet.

Donald had needed to sink a ten footer just for birdie there after twice finding the left-hand rough and he added another at the par five last after pitching to six feet before McIlroy, in rough off the tee, matched it with a putt of similar distance.

Scot Marc Warren, joint halfway leader with Donald and McIlroy, managed only a 72 to remain 11 under, his troubles starting when he pulled his drive down the long second into bushes, took a penalty drop and ran up a bogey six.

McIlroy achieved his score despite another rough night with a fever.

"I woke up at four and was not feeling great, but I guess the adrenaline keeps you going when playing," he said.

Told about Donald's run without a bogey he smiled and replied: "He must be due one."

“I think everyone is looking forward to the Number One and Number Two duel tomorrow, and that's the way it's panned out. “I know I'm excited about it, and I'm sure a lot of people are. It will be a great way to finish the 2012 European Tour season

McIlroy and Donald Share Lead

Rory McIlroy and Luke Donald are part of a three-way tie for the halfway lead in the DP World Tour Championship.

The world numbers one and two top the leaderboard alongside Scotland's Marc Warren after another day of excellent scoring on the Greg Norman-designed Earth course in Dubai.

McIlroy, whose booming drives set up numerous birdie chances, was first to post 11-under with a 67 although he felt it should have been better.

That gave him the clubhouse lead but his 36-hole tally was matched by the final pair of Donald and Warren.

Donald extended his bogey-free streak at the Earth course to a remarkable 83 holes after 14 pars and four birdies, including one to close with at 18 following a superb wedge to three feet.

Warren, who opened with a birdie for the second straight day, had a six at the seventh but played the final 11 holes in four-under to share the spoils with the top two.

Branden Grace, a four-time winner on the European Tour this year, shares fourth place on 10-under with South African compatriot Louis Oosthuizen.

Grace's 65 gave him a two-shot lead at one point while Oosthuizen's 67 included an eagle at 14.

Sergio Garcia, playing in his first event since the Ryder Cup in September after undergoing laser surgery to correct his astigmatism, carded the round of the day, a remarkable course-record 64 which included two eagles, nine birdies, two bogeys and a triple-bogey seven. That left him at seven-under.

England's Danny Willett is in a big pack at eight-under after achieving the rare feat of back-to-back eagles (at 14 and 15) in his 65.

The World Number 1 was fighting a touch of sunstroke on Friday.

"I got off the course yesterday and had a really sore head and a fever," said McIlroy. "I think it was a bit of sunstroke.

"I took a few things and felt better, but I'm not feeling great again. The sun's taking it out of me a bit."

Wozzilroy's Christmas Crackers

Caroline Wozniacki brought the house down on Thursday when she spiced up Rory McIlroy's post-round news conference at the DP World Tour Championship by asking her boyfriend what she was getting for Christmas.

The Danish tennis player, a former world number one, interrupted the normal talk about birdies and bogeys and five-irons and three-woods with a question out of the blue from the back of the room.

A smiling Wozniacki, dressed in all white, took the microphone from one of the reporters and asked McIlroy amid roars of laughter from the assembled media: "If you win this week am I going to get a really nice Christmas present?".

The world's number one golfer pulled his cap over his eyes before telling his girlfriend: "Have you not already got a lot of nice presents?

"I have been looking, I have been looking. But it won't take winning this week to buy you a nice present - I'll get you a nice present anyway."

It drew another smiling response from the golf-watching Wozniacki: "That must be because I'm an unbelievable cheerleader".

McIlroy prompted more giggles from the floor when he said: "You're a better tennis player", to which the Dane replied, "That's not very nice".

An expensive gift is sure to be heading Wozniacki's way next month with the Northern Irishman having already banked almost $13 million in official earnings by winning the money-lists on both sides of the Atlantic.

McIlroy can add $1.33 million to his bulging account by landing the first prize here this week plus a $1 million bonus from the end-of-season prize pool.

He is, however, more concerned about adding the Dubai title to his European money-list crown come Sunday night.

"It would be great to emulate what Lee Westwood did in 2009 and win both trophies," he told reporters after a first-round 66 left him one stroke behind tournament leader Luke Donald.

"That's the goal and the motivation this week. I've come to the last two DP World Tour Championships with a chance of winning the money-list and missed out.

"Having already wrapped it up this year, I guess I can go out there and play without thinking about it. It is definitely a nice thing to not have that pressure on your shoulders."

Padraig on Top of DP World

Padraig Harrington was low on confidence entering the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai and so a 5-under 67 opening round was more than a pleasant surprise.

"I shot 67 doing handstands today," Harrington told reporters. "Sometimes you do that when your expectations are low.

"Today I wasn't very confident going into the tournament so anything was going to keep me happy out there and I'm pleased with the score."

Harrington, winless on the European Tour since 2008, chose not to fret on the handful of missed opportunities he had to tie or claim the outright lead. Instead, he was satisfied with his performance and relatively good health.

"I had the flu all week in Hong Kong," he said. "I played two rounds of golf but the rest of it I spent holed up in bed trying to recover.

"I suffered a bit of a relapse this Tuesday. I still have a bit of a cough so I won't be doing too much practice this week, just taking it easy."

Harrington trails leader Luke Donald by two strokes.

Illness Knocks Lowry Dubai Out

Shane Lowry's hopes this week of crashing into the world's elite top 50 and topping the magical €1m mark for the first time in one season hung in the balance overnight after a mystery virus landed him in a Dubai hospital.

Lowry only needed to tee it up in Thursday's first round of the €6.2m DP World Tour Championship to be guaranteed at least €19,371, sending his winnings for 2012 to €1,015,910.

A top-six finish on Sunday would propel the Clara man into the world's top 50, earning a first invite to the Masters if he's still there on December 31.

Forced out of Tuesday's Pro-Am with a searing headache and persistent vomiting, Lowry was taken to hospital when symptoms continued yesterday. Badly dehydrated, he was placed on a saline drip as doctors performed tests.

He was discharged three hours later.
