Mount Juliet Wins Ranking

Backspin Magazine which focuses on the Irish Golf Market has introduced an Irish Course Rankings Poll.

The magazine took an unusual approach to their first Irish Golf Course Rankings in that they ranked the quality and variety of Ireland's Links and Parkland courses separately. A panel of 52 professional and amateur golfers joined by members of the Irish Golfing Media were asked to nominate their favourite courses in both categories. courses that impress and delight the most in order of preference.

We are pleased to announce that Mount Juliet Golf Course achieved poll position Number One in the Parkland/Inland Top 40 golf courses in Ireland and are delighted to have won this prestigious award particularly as it is the first time Backspin has carried out such a poll.

We congratulate Royal County Down who achieved poll position number 1 in the Links / Shoreline Top 30 golf courses in Ireland and wish to thank Backspin magazine for the honour bestowed on Mount Juliet.

Club Captain - Eamonn Coghlan

Eamonn Coghlan was born in Drimnagh and his first running club was the Celtic Athletic Club.

On its break up he moved to the Metropolitan Harriers club where he won the Leinster colleges 5000m title in 1970 and the following year he won the All-Ireland 1500 metres and 5000 metres titles.

In 1971 he was offered a scholarship by Villanova University and joined the famous running coach James 'Jumbo' Elliott. While there the Dubliner won four NCAA individual titles over 1,500metres and the mile. On 10 May 1975 Coghlan ran his first sub 4 minute mile in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania setting a new Irish record (3:56.2).

One week later, on 17 May, he broke the long standing European Outdoor Mile record of Michel Jazy, in a time of 3:53.3 in Kingston, Jamaica. This record lasted until August 1976.

He graduated from Villanova University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing and Communications.

Coghlan was nicknamed "The Chairman of the Boards" because of his success on indoor tracks winning 52 of his 70 races at 1,500 m and 1 Mile from 1974 to 1987. He set the world record for the indoor mile run with a time of 3.52.6 in San Diego in 1979 and then lowered it to  3:50.6 in 1981

It was improved to 3:49.78 in 1983 at New Jersey's Meadowlands indoor arena and the record stood until 1997 when it was broken by Morocco's Hicham El Guerrouj in a time of 3:48.45. It is still the second fastest indoor mile of all time. It is still a European record.

Coghlan also set the record for the indoor 2000 metres run which stood until Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia ran 4:52.86 in 1998.

Coghlan won the Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games in NYC's Madison Square Garden a record seven times (1977, 1979–81, 1983, 1985, 1987) his last win being at the age of 34. His record stood for over twenty years with Bernard Lagat winning for an eighth time in 2010:

In 1983 he won the 5000 metres at the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki,

In the 1976 Olympics, he probably made a mistake by taking the lead at 500 metres and John Walker, passed him at 1200 metres with Belgium's Ivo van Damme 2nd and West Germany's Paul-Heinz Wellman in third place. At the 1980 Olympics in Moscow he also finished fourth in the 5,000 metres.

Coghlan won silver at the 1978 European Championships in Prague over 1500 m, behind Steve Ovett of Great Britain, and in 1979, he competed in his only European Indoor Championships (he raced sparingly on the European indoor circuit due to his indoor commitments in the US), taking the gold medal in the 1500m in Vienna.

In 1994, on the Harvard University indoor track, Eamonn became the first man over age 40 to run a sub-four-minute mile. He was 41 at the time.

Since his retirment Coghlan has worked as director of fundraising and development for Our Lady's Hospital and is a regular panellist on RTÉ.

His youngest son, John, is one of Ireland's leading junior athletes and his eldest son, Eamonn, is a golf professional in the United States. His son Michael is an aspiring actor and his eldest, Suzanne, has a career in banking.

In 2008, he served as Grand Marshall for Dublin's St Patrick's Day parade.

Coghlan's book Chairman of the Boards was released in 2008.

In the News - Wardlow PING Winner

Three was the magic number yesterday for Gary Wardlow as he made another trip up north to win the PING Ulster Grand Prix round at Ardglass.

The Edenderry-based former Dunmurry amateur posted a six-under-par 64 that included an eagle three, seven birdie threes and five par threes as he started both halves with five threes.

Wardlow teed-off at the first with a chip-and-putt birdie three, repeated the performance at the third hole and again at the fourth with his longest putt being three feet.

He was hauled back to earth at the seventh hole when he put his three wood approach into bushes and lost he ball to run up double bogey seven.

Out in one-under-par 33, the winner pencilled in eagle three at the long 11th with a drive and wedge to 10 feet, then made back-to-back birdie threes at 13, where he drove the green, and 14, getting down from four feet after reaching the surface with a drive and seven iron.

Another lost ball at the 15th hole cost him bogey six as he made birdie with the second ball but he finished with a flourish again making back-to-back birdie threes at 17 and 18 as he rifled a seven iron to three feet at 17 and pitched to one foot at the last.

However, the performance doesn't get Wardlow into the top eight in the Grand Prix Order of Merit.

The leading eight, after the final event, will qualify for matchplay and topping the list just now is Peter Martin (Riverside Academy) on 56.83 points with Damian Mooney next and David P Jones in third place

Ladies Club - Martina Casserly

One of my main hopes for 2011 is that the club achieves success and realise the potential that we have at both provincial and national level.

We are one of the strongest clubs in the country with a solid membership and great ambitions. In terms of ladies golf, we have achieved a lot in recent years and are always challenging for top honours.

It is a club in which there is a great spirit and camaraderie and hopefully these characteristics continue into the future. But we continually need to look forward and develop.

It goes without saying that I would love to see more lady members joining the club and it is something that I will be actively involved in promoting during my year in office.

New members are the future of every club and it is hugely important that we continue to encourage people to join our fantastic facility. I think that the availability of family membership will be a huge bonus in this regard.

I would like to compliment all those involved in the recent developments which have taken place and it proves that the club is not lacking in ambition and ingenuity.

Finally, I would like to wish every member of Tuam Golf Club the best of luck during the year and also our teams while we continue to welcome visitors with open arms.

Martina Casserly – Lady Captain 2011

Pro Tour - Poulter Speaks out on Rules

Ian Poulter at Volvo Golf Champions, Bahrain

Ian Poulter believes some golf rules need to be re-examined to avoid the kind of disqualifications the sport has seen in recent weeks.

Padraig Harrington and Camilo Villegas were both disqualified from events this month because of violations noticed by TV viewers.

“If you look at the scenarios and situations we’ve had in the last 12 months, I think a lot of rules certainly need to be looked at,” Poulter said ahead of the Volvo Golf Champions in Bahrain. “I think there’s no common sense involved with a number of the rules, so that needs to be addressed.”

Harrington was in second place after the first round of last week’s Abu Dhabi Golf Championships but was disqualified after a TV viewer pointed out that he did not replace his ball correctly when it moved after he picked up his marker.

Villegas was disqualified from the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii after he had swatted away loose pieces of grass while his attempted chip up a slope rolled back toward him – removing objects that could have influenced the movement of the ball.

Both players were disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard, because their violations should have resulted in a penalty.

Poulter said the rule was outdated, since there was no longer much of a need for an official scorecard handed in by the players.

He added: “Every shot is visible for everybody to see on television, we have walking scorers, and there are the stats people. Therefore, it’s not like you can cheat your score. Therefore, leave the door open if someone has made a mistake. If they get a two-shot penalty, they are still in the tournament. The tournament still benefits from having some of the world’s best players in the field.”

Poulter himself was given a one-stroke penalty during a two-way play-off at the Dubai World Championship in November after he dropped the ball on his coin marker on the green, effectively giving the victory to Robert Karlsson of Sweden. In that case, the Englishman immediately called over the referee to notify him of the violation.

Golf viewers have been warned not to turn on players if they see them grounding their clubs on sand in Bahrain this week as, for the inaugural Volvo Golf Champions, there are deemed to be no bunkers, just acres of sandy waste areas.

The European Tour’s ruling allows players to take practice swings, move loose impediments and ground the club 'lightly behind the ball’ in all sand areas.

Chief referee Andy McFee, the man who broke the disqualification news to Harrington in Abu Dhabi last week, said: “We have taken this decision to provide clarity for the players.

“The golf course is absolutely fine, but the blurring of the boundaries between desert and bunker, whilst visually attractive, potentially provides a major problem of definition. As this is common throughout the course and not restricted to the odd situation here and there, we felt this was the best way to exercise our duty to define the course properly. It will lead to some odd-looking situations, but that is infinitely preferable to players incurring penalties.”

Equipment News - Callaway

JB Holmes

Callaway Golf Company announced it has reached agreement with PGA TOUR Professional J.B. Holmes. The winner of two PGA TOUR events and former Ryder Cup team member will play a full complement of Callaway equipment and compete with a Callaway branded staff bag and headwear when he makes his 2011 PGA TOUR debut this week at the Farmers Insurance Open in La Jolla, California.

“I am thrilled to be a part of the Callaway Golf family,” Holmes said. “I feel honored to be joining such an elite PGA TOUR staff. Callaway has a rich history of winners playing their equipment and my goal is to add to that tradition.”

Born and raised in Kentucky, the long-hitting Holmes had perhaps his most consistent PGA TOUR season in 2010, notching ten top-20 finishes in 26 starts. Over two consecutive weeks last season, he finished tied for third at the Northern Trust Open and tied for second at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

His two victories on the PGA TOUR both came in front of the raucous crowds of Scottsdale’s FBR Open (now the Waste Management Phoenix Open). In 2006, his rookie season, Holmes won the FBR Open by seven shots in just his fifth professional start. He won the same event in 2008, making a birdie on the first playoff hole to beat Callaway Staff Professional Phil Mickelson. His ability to perform under pressure suited him well as a member of the 2008 Ryder Cup team, when he earned 2 1/2 points for a victorious U.S. team at Valhalla in his home state of Kentucky.

“J.B. is an exciting young talent that fits quite well with Callaway’s brand philosophy,” said Nick Raffaele, Vice President of Sports Marketing, Callaway Golf. “His recognition of our great products and desire to win clearly matches with our goals. We look forward to many years with J.B. and what we expect will be plenty of winning with Callaway.”

Holmes played his college golf at the University of Kentucky, where he helped lead the Wildcats to their first SEC title. In 2005, he was the SEC Player of the Year and an Academic All-American in 2004-2005. Holmes grew up as an impressive golf prodigy, playing on his high school team as a third-grader and winning the Kentucky state high school title as a sophomore.

Holmes plays in the Farmers Insurance Open this week at Torrey Pines

Supplier News - Glenmuir

GLENMUIR, one of Europe’s leading golf apparel brands, has renewed its corporate partnership with the PGAs of Europe and will continue to support the organisation’s International Team Championship.

The Scotland-based company regards working with the PGAs of Europe as an excellent way to strengthen its relationship with many PGA professionals working outside of the UK and Ireland.

Glenmuir supports many initiatives and activities in golf, especially at grass roots level where PGA professionals are often at the forefront of projects designed to grow and develop the game.

Colin Mee, managing director of Glenmuir, said: “We are delighted to renew our status as a Corporate Partner of the PGAs of Europe.

“Particularly in countries where golf is just being developed, or where the game is still in its infancy, it is important for the golf industry to support PGA professionals and help them to deliver the game in the correct way.

“Being a Corporate Partner directly helps to support PGAs of Europe members while sponsoring the International Team Championship means those members have a high-profile championship in which they can be proud to play.”

From the Ryder Cup to the PGA Cup and the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship, Glenmuir consistently demonstrates its love for the game of golf at all levels.

Said Ian Randell, PGAs of Europe chief executive
“Glenmuir continue to be great supporters of professional golf and providers of excellent service to PGA Professionals. Their team is a joy to work with and extremely professional in the manner in which they conduct their business.

2011 brings the sixth year that we have enjoyed their support for our International Team Championship which has also been instrumental in the forming of mutually beneficial relationships with a large number of our member PGAs. In fact it is testament to the strength of the partnership and quality of Glenmuir products that no less than 18 teams wore Glenmuir apparel for the 2010 Championship.”

In the News - Damian Mooney

9th Green Castlerock

Damian Mooney likes to keep it interesting by mixing his game as he showed at Castlerock in the PING PGA Ulster Golfers' Alliance outing.

The big man shot down three eagles but also three-putted three times and balanced a birdie three with a bogey five as he posted a winning three-under-par 70.

To get everyone a full round of golf, a two-tee start was organised and Mooney blasted off at the 10th hole but three-stabbed that green. He repeated the performance at the 12th and lost another shot at 16 where he put his second shot into bushes and had to take a penalty drop.

Then he turned on the player power for which he is famous. At the long 17th he was short with a drive and four iron but chipped in for eagle and birdied the next from nine feet to turn in level par 37.

He was back to one over after losing a ball off the first tee but was back to regulation when he drove the edge of the second green and chipped to three inches for birdie. His second eagle flew in at the third hole, carved out by a drive and seven iron to eight feet, with his third eagle landing at the fifth where he rifled a drive and eight iron to one foot.

On the eighth surface the winner again three-stabbed for bogey five and finished with a par for a homeward run of three-under-33.

Three amateurs shared 39 points with Brian Rossi (Belvoir Pk) best on the back nine with 22. Stephen Doran (Mourne) came home in 20 strokes for second spot while former professional Kenny Stevenson (Warrenpoint) took third spot with 18 back.

The gross prize was won by Johnny Hagan, a plus-one handicapper from Kirkistown Castle, with a one-over-74 while topping the team leaderboard was the Portadown combination of pro Paul Stevenson and his dad Kenny, Edgar McReynolds and Bill Nixon.

They posted 94 points.

Course Designers - C. O'Connor Jnr

Over the past 16 years Christy O’Connor Jnr has turned much of his attention to golf course architecture and his portfolio now consists of over 30 golf courses throughout Ireland and Europe. This has earned him a reputation as one of the finest golf course architects in the country, so much so that his talent and expertise are now being sought on an international level.

Some of his projects include Mount Wolseley in Tullow Co. Carlow, the magnificent new course at Headfort, Kells Co. Meath, Galway Bay Golf and Country Club, Co. Galway and most recently Palmerstown House, Naas, Co. Kildare.

After spending over thirty years playing professionally, Christy has had the opportunity of competing on many of the greatest golf courses in the world. Christy then employs much of this experience into all of his designs with the challenge of creating a championship standard golf course whilst bearing in mind the playing skills of golfers of all levels.
The Design Process
Site Inspection:

During site inspection Christy O’Connor Jnr will meet with the owners/committee members to discuss their needs and objectives. He will then undertake a detailed study of the land which will include initial environmental impact review, soil conditions, water features/wetlands, topographic features and vegetation.

Course Design:
A hallmark of any great golf course designer is to preserve the natural lie of the land. This is the simple design philosophy by which Christy O’Connor Jnr and his team adhere to. By creating a golf course seamlessly with nature and preserving something beautiful to enjoy for years to come.

Environment:
Christy O’Connor Jnr and his construction team are very environmentally conscious and spend a great deal of time during the design process to utilize the greatest number of trees, shrubs and landscape in their natural state rather than removing them. Indeed he will bring many of these features into play whilst shaping the golf course. His main objective is to create something natural and beautiful that will stand the test of time.

Design Implementation:
Christy O’Connor Jnr will personally remain actively involved throughout the whole project. He will work closely with the construction team through each phase from clearing and moving through to the grow-in period of time, and continue to make follow up visits even after the golf course is complete. Unlike, some golf architects Christy employs a direct hands on approach and is on site on a regular basis ensuring that the project is finished to a very high standard.
Computer CAD Design:

Christy O’Connor Jnr and his golf team utilizes the latest software to produce a document ranging from conceptual plans to construction drawings.
Follow up Visits/Post Construction Design Service:

During this phase Christy O’Connor Jnr will continue ongoing post construction site visits, which will include consultation and design review services. Christy will continue to cooperate with the owners in the publicity of the golf course and be present and participate in the grand opening.

Redesign
Golf courses change dramatically during their lifetime with the quality of the drainage systems, soils and bunkers decreasing with age. External factors such as the maturity of the trees and excessive golf play can create a need for the remodelling and redesign of a golf course. Much experience and expertise is required here and this is an area which Christy O’Connor Jnr gets much enjoyment from. Redesigning a golf course affords him with the opportunity to work with many architectural masterpieces, whilst enabling him to put his own mark of expertise into the project.
