Godspeed Christy............

Christy O’Connor Jnr’s strong faith “came to his rescue” after his 17-year-old son’s death, his funeral was told today.

President Michael D Higgins was among several hundred mourners to attend the funeral at Galway Cathedral.

The crowd also included Taoiseach Enda Kenny’s aide-de-camp Commandant Kieran Carey , golfers Sam Torrance, Paul McGinley, Shane Lowry, des Smyth and Eamon D’Arcy, former taoiseach Brian Cowen, businessman Denis O’Brien, former rugby international Keith Wood, horse trainer Mouse Morris and Fine Gael TD and former football manager John O’Mahony

In his homily , Fr Michael Kelly referenced O’Connor Jnr’s son, Darren, who died in a 1998 road crash. He said the golfer “spoke openly and confidently of his conviction that he would meet Darren again - not quite so soon, I imagine. He prayed to him and for him and was convinced that Darren came to his assistance more than once.”

He added: “Unfortunately that same belief will not fill the vacant chair or the emptiness you are experiencing in your hearts today. But the support and prayers of the thousands of friends who shook your hands these last few days will carry you through the various stages of your loss and mourning.”

Fr Kelly said a steady flow of glowing tributes have been paid in the days since O’Connor Jnr died. “I have no doubt Christy had a large number of very close personal friends but he had the gift of making every acquaintance feel that they were special - and he treated them accordingly,” he said.

“They were all tributes to ‘a great human being’, whom we had the privilege to be associated with in one way or another. He was a proud Galway man, an Irishman and a European. His leaving has left our world a poorer place. He was one in a million.”

He best remembered for a lead role in the Ryder Cup win in 1989. During his funeral Paul McGinley brought the Ryder Cup up to his coffin.

Musicians who played during his funeral included Frankie Gavin and Sean Keane .

O’Connor Jnr had been on holiday in Tenerife when he died suddenly last Wednesday.

Tributes were paid to the golfer from across the world of sport, society and politics, with the golfer fondly remembered for his good nature, generosity and most famously for defying the odds to help Europe beat the US, thanks to a stunning two iron from 200 yards to within feet of the 18th hole at The Belfry.

O’Connor Jnr is survived by his wife Ann, son Nigel and daughter Ann.

The golfer’s other son, Darren, died in a road crash in 1998 aged 17.

McIlroy One of Game's Best - Torrance

Rory McIlroy deserves to be rated among the best golfers in history after his stunning performances this year, according to Sam Torrance.

McIlroy bounced back from a troubled 2013 campaign with four victories this season, including two majors and a maiden World Golf Championship title during a sparking run of form over July and August.

He kick-started his year with a superb win in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, and he produced a dominant display to collect his first Open title at Royal Liverpool in mid-July.

The Northern Ireland ace made it three wins in three starts with further victories at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and the PGA Championship, and he capped a memorable year by helping Europe to their third straight Ryder Cup triumph.

Torrance was one of Paul McGinley's assistant captains at Gleneagles, and he was hugely impressed with what he saw of McIlroy at close range.

"Rory is as good as I've seen in a long, long time," said the 61-year-old Scot. "He's got everything. Butch Harmon did an analysis of his swing and every single pinpoint part was in a perfect position.

"I don't think Rory can get much better and I fancy him to win any tournament he plays in. Every 10 or 20 years someone like him comes along"

"I don't think Rory can get much better and I fancy him to win any tournament he plays in. Every 10 or 20 years someone like him comes along.

"Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Seve Ballesteros, Lee Trevino, Nick Faldo, these guys only come along every once in a while and Rory has now arrived and is here to stay."

McIlroy was close to unstoppable as he thrashed good friend Rickie Fowler 5&4 in Sunday's singles at the Ryder Cup, carding seven birdies and an eagle in a remarkable 14 holes.

"His start on the Sunday, 3-3-3-3-3, to go five up on one of the young American lions was extraordinary," added Torrance. "That's something Rory has got, the ability to turn it on. I watched him up close at Gleneagles and it was like something I've never seen before."

Torrance also admitted how "honoured" he was to be directly involved with Europe's Ryder Cup team for the first time since he captained the side to victory at The Belfry in 2002.

"It's been a long time, 12 years, since I was last in the team room and to be invited back was a huge honour," he said.

"The highlight for me was to be able to watch the way the players these days hit the golf ball. It's a game I'm unfamiliar with, the distance they hit it, the clubs they hit for their irons, and it's wonderful to watch.

"Everything about the European team was exceptional. The team effort, the way the players gelled, the way they looked after each other and the companionship in the team room."

Torrance also had nothing but praise for McGinley's leadership, adding: "He was as good a captain as there has ever been. Paul was meticulous in everything he did, it was a different style to anything I've ever seen.

"The team meetings every night, his involvement with the caddies, the people he got to come in and talk in the team room.

"He was positive, he was vocal, he spoke to everybody. His involvement with the caddies was special, he gave them a very high position that week, they had lunch with us in the team room all the time and it led to a great atmosphere," said Torrance.

"There was lots of banter and the atmosphere was really good from start to finish. His speeches at night, in the team meetings, were extraordinary, and for me it was just great to be a part of."

Sam Torrance believes European captain Paul McGinley will leave “no stone unturned” as he bids to retain the Ryder Cup in September.

Torrance, who skippered Europe to a memorable victory at the Belfry in 2002, has been appointed as assistant captain for this year’s contest at Gleneagles.

The Irishman has been a regular visitor to the Perthshire venue to oversee the course set-up and ensure it favours his own team’s strengths.

"Having the Ryder Cup back in Scotland is fantastic for golf. This is the home of golf and it rightly should be here, and it’s a wonderful venue here at Gleneagles."
Sam Torrance

Torrance is at Gleneagles this week to assist with the preparations, and he is delighted that the Ryder Cup is returning to Scotland for the first time since Muirfield hosted the event in 1973.

“It’s just great to be here, and the course is looking fantastic,” Torrance told Sky Sports News. “The rough is not where it’s going to be in September but it’s well on its way.

“Paul has been up here numerous times making sure that it is set up to suit the Europeans, which is what home advantage is, so it’s all in hand and all working well.

“Having the Ryder Cup back in Scotland is fantastic for golf. This is the home of golf and it rightly should be here, and it’s a wonderful venue here at Gleneagles.

“It’s a spectacular golf course. It was designed by Jack Nicklaus, but we can make it suit us.

“Paul will be meticulous. He’s a great people person and the players respect him. He’s very knowledgeable and he will not leave a stone unturned.

“This will be his tournament and I think he will do a fantastic job. He was captain in the Seve Trophy a couple of times and did a great job. That job was leading in to being the Ryder Cup captain captain and he rightly got the job.”

Torrance also hopes to have Scottish representation on the team, and he backed Stephen Gallacher to qualify following his strong run of form this season.

“Stephen Gallacher is right on the brink at the moment and he’s playing well and in the top 50 in the world,” Torrance added. “He’s in all the top events, and he’s got a great chance of making it. Obviously we would love to have a Scotsman in the team.”

Torrance also played down suggestions that the American players do not have the same hunger and desire for the Ryder Cup as the Europeans.

He said: “Obviously we can win it again but so can the Americans. The one thing you must never do is under-estimate your opponents.

“There’s talk that the Americans don’t care much about the Ryder Cup, but trust me they do. They want to win it just as badly as us and they will be trying just as hard as us. We’ve got to keep that in mind and be wary of them.”

Meanwhile, three-time European captain Bernard Gallacher believes McGinley's prospective team is coming together nicely just three months ahead of the contest.

With Rory McIlroy winning the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, Martin Kaymer's runaway victory in the US Open and Justin Rose ending his title drought last weekend, Gallacher is delighted to see Europe's biggest stars coming into form.

"I think it’s brilliant for Paul McGinley that he’s going in there with Martin Kaymer. He won the Players Championship and the US Open, and then Justin Rose won at Congressional last week," Gallacher said on Sky Sports News.

"It’s a terrific boost for Paul McGinley and I think his team is taking shape.

"I think Europe are only favourites because they are at home, but I think the contest itself is very even. Hopefully the home support will just push it our way."

El Mecanico Congratulates Smyth

Miguel Angel Jiménez was the first man to welcome Des Smyth as his Vice-Captain for the inaugural EurAsia Cup presented by DRB–HICOM.

Smyth was revealed as one of Paul McGinely’s Ryder Cup Vice-Captains for the biennial clash with the USA in September at a media conference in Dublin this morning, where it was also announced that Smyth will be Jiménez’s right-hand man in Malaysia when Europe travel to the Glenmarie Golf and Country Club to face Asia in the inaugural EurAsia Cup from March 27-29.

Jiménez will act as playing Captain of the ten-man European team, meaning Smyth’s experience as a two-time Ryder Cup player (1979 and 1981) and Vice-Captain (2006) will be vital as the Irishman assumes a leading role behind the scenes in Malaysia.

“I am delighted to welcome Des to the team for the EurAsia Cup presented by DRB–HICOM,” said Jiménez. “Des is a man with a lot of experience and someone I know I can trust so he will be a great Vice-Captain.

Paul McGinley and I have spoken a lot about the EurAsia Cup team and how important an event it is in terms of The Ryder Cup. A lot of the guys on my team could be playing for Paul in September so the EurAsia Cup is a great opportunity for Des to reacquaint himself with the experienced players and integrate with the younger guys.”

Smyth is relishing the opportunity to be part of the inaugural EurAsia Cup with Jiménez and the nine other members of Team Europe - Thomas Björn, Jamie Donaldson, Victor Dubuisson, Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño, Stephen Gallacher, Pablo Larrazábal, Joost Luiten, Graeme McDowell and Thorbjørn Olesen.

He said: “I am very much looking forward to working with Miguel and the European players at the EurAsia Cup. I already know a lot of the players such as Graeme, Thomas, Gonzalo and Stephen and I am looking forward to getting to know the rest of the guys.

“I feel I can bring a lot of experience to the role of Vice-Captain and I will be there to support Miguel and hopefully offer some good advice when required. I am thrilled to have been asked to be a Vice-Captain for both The Ryder Cup and the EurAsia Cup and I’m looking forward to getting started in Malaysia in a couple of weeks.”

The announcement of Smyth as Vice-Captain to Jiménez means the teams for the EurAsia Cup presented by DRB–HICOM are now complete after Asian Captain Thongchai Jaidee announced Boonchu Ruangkit as his Vice-Captain earlier today.
