Smyth Back on Course in France

Getty Images
Des Smyth is looking forward to getting back to his day job when he tees up in this week’s French Riviera Masters at Terre Blanche Hotel Spa Golf Resort in Provence.

Irishman Smyth spent last week working as part of Paul McGinley’s backroom staff at the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles but is raring to get back to European Senior Tour action on a course where he finished tied fifth behind England’s David J Russell two years ago.

“The Ryder Cup was a wonderful experience and a something I would not have missed for the world,” said the five-time Senior Tour champion.

“I’d say it was probably my last foray into the big time and I could not have spent it with a nicer group of people. They were all so professional and determined to get the job done. It was a pleasure to work with them and is something I will never forget

“You might find this quite amusing when I say this, but you’re so busy running around the whole week turns into a bit of a blur. I was very tired by the time the celebrations started on Sunday night, but I was sensible enough to bail out about 2.00 am. I’m getting too old for really late nights so maybe that’s why I’m feeling relaxed and ready to go.”

Smyth arrives in the south of France fresh from a tie for third at the Russian Open Golf Championship (Senior) and a share of 16th place at the WINSTONgolf Senior Open in Germany.

“I was playing well before the Ryder Cup and have been looking forward to coming back here.

“It’s a challenging course. There are a lot of trees. If the wind blows it’s a bit like Wentworth. The wind funnels up and down so you’re never quite sure where it’s coming from.”

“I haven’t hand a club in my hands since Sunday week but I played the last two tournaments well and I’m confident I can keep my run going.”

Another player who is looking forward to the third French Riviera Masters to be played in successive years at Terre Blanche is Australia’s Peter Fowler, who 12 months ago overturned Andrew Oldcorn’s four shot lead to finish three strokes clear of the Scot and Spaniard Santiago Luna.

“I have a lot of warm memories of Terre Blanche and it’s a course that suits my eye.”

“I have stayed on site for the last couple of years and it’s a great place to. They’ve got a big pool and that’s good for loosening me up in the mornings. By the time I get to the range my body is feeling pretty good and it’s not every week I can say that.

“You always feel comfortable on certain courses and this is one of those for me. It’s not easy but it certainly rewards good golf.”

This week’s tournament has attracted a strong field that includes former Ryder Cup Captains Mark James and Ian Woosnam, as well as ex-Ryder Cup players Gordon Brand, Gordon Brand Jnr, Antonio Garrido, Manuel Pinero, Barry Lane, Ronan Rafferty and Philip Walton.

There is also a strong French contingent comprising Marc Farry, Jean-Francois Remesy, Roger Sabarros, Francois Illouz and Jean Pierre Sallat.

“It’s always nice to play at home and particularly when the weather is as good as this,” said Farry. “It’s a fantastic venue and seems to get better every year we play.

“It’s a nice mixture of the best European and US style courses. You have to do everything well here. You have to drive well and putt well. The greens are very undulating and I think they are quicker than they have been in the past. It’s a demanding course but it’s also a very good test of golf.”

Terre Blanche is a European Tour Destination and part of the European Tour Properties portfolio. The resort was the first to be afforded European Tour Performance Institute status.

Woosnam Bemused by McGinley Five

Ian Woosnam is bemused by European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley’s decision to opt for five vice-captains instead of the usual four and believes it could be a sign of weakness.

McGinley raised a few eyebrows last week when he drafted in 2012 captain José María Olazábal, Padraig Harrington and Miguel Ángel Jimenez to join Sam Torrance and Des Smyth as his deputies for the biennial team event at Gleneagles later this month.

2006 Ryder Cup captain Woosnam said: “I honestly thought he was going to go for four vice-captains. It took me a little bit by surprise when he went for five. I guess he’s trying to get a little bit of advice from everybody but sometimes you can get too much. At the end of the day he’s the one who has got to make the decisions.

“Is it a sign of weakness having that many? It does seem a lot. Maybe he’s trying to get as much experience as he possibly can. He might need a bigger team room, he might as well have 12 vice-captains, one for each player.”

McGinley’s playing record, he has won four times on the European Tour, pales in comparison to United States counterpart Tom Watson who is one of golf’s true greats having collected eight major victories including five British Opens.

However, Woosnam, who was captain when Europe pummelled the US in 2006, believes that the 47-year-old Irishman has got what it takes to deliver Ryder Cup glory.

“Paul may have only won four tournaments but I think he’s going to be well respected by his players. He’s very professional,” said the 56-year-old Welshman. “If you put it in football terms, you don’t always have to be the best player to be the best captain. Not at all.”

McGinley will have four of the world’s top five players in his 12-strong team in Scotland – Rory McIlroy, Sergio García, Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose – but Woosnam said no-one should underestimate a US side led by Watson.

“The American team is very well balanced and with Tom running that team, he’s not going to take any nonsense,” he explained. “If Tom Watson talks, you listen – if you don’t there must be something wrong with you.

“He doesn’t like losing, he’s got a great mind, he’s a very intelligent guy and he’ll be working it all out. This is not going to be the walkover everyone thinks it’s going to be.

“Tom’s going to have more authority in that team room. He’s going to say: ‘I’m the captain and you’ve got to do what I say.’ All the players will have respect for him as captain. He’s going to demand respect.“

On his fellow countryman Jamie Donaldson, who will be making his debut in the event, Woosnam said: “It’s fantastic to have another Welshman in the team. Jamie’s got a great putting stroke, he’s got a lot of bottle and I think he’s going to be a tremendous addition.

“He could play with anyone in the team and I can’t see any faults in his game really. I played with him three or four years ago in an event in Barbados. I didn’t see him as a potential Ryder Cup player back then but he’s come on in leaps and bounds and is now a really solid player.”

Harrington Joins McGinley Team

Paul McGinley has named Padraig Harrington, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Jose Maria Olazabal as his final vice-captains for the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles later this month. The tthree have 17 Ryder Cup appearances between them,

They will join Des Smyth and Sam Torrance in McGinley's back-room staff as the home side look to retain the trophy against the United States from September 26-28.

Olazabal played in the contest seven times and captained the side in the 'Miracle at Medinah' in 2012, while Harrington has made six appearances and Jimenez four. Jimenez was vice-captain to Seve Ballesteros in 1997 and Olazabal two years ago and was also made captain of the European team in the inaugural EurAsia Cup by McGinley.

McGinley said: "I know it's been common in the past to have three or four vice-captains but I've gone for five because I feel an extra person is justified due to the additional workload which comes from being the home team, in addition to how well I saw such a system working when we ended up having five vice captains under Colin Montgomerie at Celtic Manor in 2010 (Sergio Garcia was a late addition).

"Padraig is my oldest friend on Tour and is a guy I have known most of my life. We went to school together, came through the amateur ranks together and have been together in many contests for both Ireland and Europe over the years, so I know what he can bring to the team room.

"As far as Miguel is concerned, he is someone that the spectators love as well as being very popular with all the players. However, he is also a person that I respect very much. I have sat beside him for over a decade on the Tournament Players' Committee and have seen him exhibit an integrity on many occasions that is very admirable.

"Finally, Jose Maria's passion for the Ryder Cup is recognised the world over. It was obvious in his legendary partnership with Seve and was also so very apparent two years ago at Medinah, so I'm delighted he has accepted my invitation to be involved again, once more maintaining that important continuity."

"I have complete confidence and trust in all five of my vice-captains and the help they will give me in the difficult quest of trying to retain the Ryder Cup."

Harrington said: "I am really looking forward to being part of the Ryder Cup from a different angle to the playing side. That aspect of things is something that really interests me and I'm therefore delighted that Paul has given me the opportunity.

"Paul is a good friend of mine and I think he's done a great job in the captaincy thus far, therefore I don't necessarily think he needs that much help. But he knows I'm happy to get involved behind the scenes to give him and the players as much assistance as I can."

Jimenez, whose EurAsia Cup team secured a dramatic 10-10 draw in Malaysia in March, said: "I thoroughly enjoyed being captain of Europe at the EurAsia Cup which was a great opportunity for me and I am looking forward to bringing the experience I gained there to the team room at Gleneagles. I have a great relationship with all the players, having played alongside them regularly over the years."

Olazabal added: "Everyone knows how much the Ryder Cup has meant in my career and it's an occasion that I love being part of. It is a unique and special event - and I know that will be the case once again in Scotland in three weeks' time.

"I think we have a very good team in place but, as Paul said yesterday, we are under no illusions about how formidable a test the United States team will present. But he knows I will do everything I possibly can to help him and the players throughout the week."

Smyth's Woburn Feeling

Getty Images
Des Smyth is hoping to feed off the good vibes he has at Woburn Golf Club as he looks to kick-start his 2014 European Senior Tour season at the Travis Perkins Masters.

The Irishman, who will be one of Paul McGinley’s Vice-Captains at next month’s Ryder Cup, is a two-time winner of the tournament, and he will be aiming to continue his sequence of triumphing in Ryder Cup years, after claiming the title in 2010 and 2012.

It has been a slow start to the current campaign for Smyth, whose only top ten finish came a fortnight ago at the SSE Scottish Senior Open.

But he believes a return to the picturesque Duke’s Course at Woburn could be just the catalyst he needs to get his game back on track.

“I’ve had two wins here and it is a place I’ve always liked coming to,” said the 61 year old. “I played poorly last year, but my form had gone off by that stage. I’m searching for a bit of form again this year. I’ve had no performances worth talking about so far. I’ve had one top ten in Scotland when I had a chance to do better but messed up at the end, so I’m hoping I can get going this week and get some good vibes from this place.

“I’ve been working on a few things recently. I’m always experimenting when things aren’t working and I need tournaments to find my form. The back nine last week (at the English Senior Open) I was trying something which felt really good. Now, I’ve no idea if it is going to work this week, but I have a clear picture of what I’m going to try and hopefully this is a good week for me.

“Coming back to a course where you have done well before always helps. This is a good driver’s course too, and that is my strength. I’m a straight driver, but on some courses you don’t get the reward for it. On this course you do. If my driving holds up, which it normally does, and if I get something going with my irons, which I think I have, then it might be a good week.”

The Travis Perkins Masters always attracts one of the biggest crowds of the Senior Tour season, and Smyth hopes that can also help inspire him to a good performance this week as he tries to regain the title, after watching Colin Montgomerie succeed him as champion 12 months ago.

“This is our best tournament outside the Senior Open,” he said. “We get over 20,000 people here and you get all the best players. It’s great having Monty back defending his title and it is great to see Eduardo Romero playing here as well. There is a good atmosphere and it is a great tournament, so I hope it has the right effect on me.”

Rafferty and Walton Make Cut

Getty Images
Ronan Rafferty and Philip Walton made the halfway cut in the Seniors Open Championship at Royal Porthcawl ion Friday, trailing runaway leader, Bernhard Langer.

Langer added a 66 stroke card to his opening 65 for an 11 under par total of 131 to move seven clear of Chris Williams and Colin Montgomerie, who produced a stunning 66 for 138, carding eight birdies.

“I played very smart, very aggressive, then very smart and I was fortunate to some extent, but I have played very well the last two days,” Langer said afterwards.

“It wasn’t the kind of start I wanted today, but from that point on, I settled down and I played some really good golf.
Opportunities

“I missed a couple of opportunities earlier on, but then I started to play a little better as well and brought it home to the clubhouse with six-under-par from that point on, which I’m very pleased with overall.”

Rafferty, in his first year as a senior and only a part-time competitor golfer these days, posted a second round two over par 73 for a 36-hole total of 148-six over par, just one stroke inside the cut.

“I have not been playing much lately so my main aim was to make the cut, ” said Rafferty, who played at Porthcawl in the 1980 amateur championship and home internationals before turning professional and competing in the Coral Classic on the South Wales links.

Philip Walton, who threatened to challenge for the lead for a time on Thursday but finished with a one-over-par 72, just survived the cut following a 77 for 149.

Having started with a triple bogey seven and the 1995 Ryder cup winner never recovered although a birdie four at the last saved him from elimination.

“It was tough out there today but no excuses, I played badly,” said Walton.

Des Smyth was disappointed with 79 to go out of the tournament on 151 after starting with four straight bogeys.

Mark McNulty also missed out along with Denis O’Sullivan.

VP Smyth Leads ISPA Handa

Getty Images
Des Smyth holed a snaking 25 birdie putt on the 18th green to take the early lead at the ISPS Handa Seniors PGA Championship at the Stoke by Nayland Golf, Hotel & Spa.

Smyth had key-hole surgery to ‘clean up’ a troublesome knee problem a couple of months ago and has not played much golf in the build up to the new Senior Tour season.

“Maybe that’s the secret – play less golf!” he smiled after signing for a five under par 67 to take a one stroke lead over 2013 Senior Rookie of the Year, Steen Tinning of Denmark.

Both Smyth and Tinning made four birdies in their first five holes during round one, but while Tinning followed that up with 13 straight pars, Smyth dropped a shot at nine before bouncing back straight away with a sublime chip-in on the tenth.

“I have to admit I would have taken your hand off for a four when I was looking that chip,” said Smyth. “But it was one of those days where I got a couple of breaks and when you get those breaks all of a sudden you find yourself leading the tournament.

“It was a very enjoyable day and a great start for me. I honestly had no clue what to expect this week as I haven’t played much since that little procedure on my knee so I am delighted to be in the lead.”

The Irishman is relishing the chance to be one of Paul McGinley’s lieutenants when Europe defence The Ryder Cup at Gleneagles in September, but he is also looking forward to a summer of playing good golf before he throws himself into The Ryder Cup.

“The Ryder Cup is something so big these days that it is a great honour to be involved and when the Captain asks you for some help as Paul has done with me then it is impossible to say no to that.

“It will be a great experience at Gleneagles but we have a bit of time until then and I would like to go there with a Senior Tour title or two under my belt – that would be very nice indeed.”

Smyth will face some stiff competition if he is to stay in front for the remaining 54 holes of the ISPS Handa Seniors PGA Championship, with Tinning followed closely on the leaderboard by some of the Senior Tour’s most formidable names.

Peter Fowler, the Order of Merit winner in 2012, leads a hugely talented pack of ten players tied on three under, just two off the lead. Also among that rank are former Ryder Cup Captain Mark James, Santiago Luna, Mark Mouland, Paul Eales, George Ryall, Jerry Smith, Andrew Murray and Jean-Pierre Sallat.

But it was to be Des’s day in the beautiful East Anglian countryside as the Irishman put himself in a great position to contend for what would be the sixth victory of his Senior career.

El Mecanico Congratulates Smyth

Miguel Angel Jiménez was the first man to welcome Des Smyth as his Vice-Captain for the inaugural EurAsia Cup presented by DRB–HICOM.

Smyth was revealed as one of Paul McGinely’s Ryder Cup Vice-Captains for the biennial clash with the USA in September at a media conference in Dublin this morning, where it was also announced that Smyth will be Jiménez’s right-hand man in Malaysia when Europe travel to the Glenmarie Golf and Country Club to face Asia in the inaugural EurAsia Cup from March 27-29.

Jiménez will act as playing Captain of the ten-man European team, meaning Smyth’s experience as a two-time Ryder Cup player (1979 and 1981) and Vice-Captain (2006) will be vital as the Irishman assumes a leading role behind the scenes in Malaysia.

“I am delighted to welcome Des to the team for the EurAsia Cup presented by DRB–HICOM,” said Jiménez. “Des is a man with a lot of experience and someone I know I can trust so he will be a great Vice-Captain.

Paul McGinley and I have spoken a lot about the EurAsia Cup team and how important an event it is in terms of The Ryder Cup. A lot of the guys on my team could be playing for Paul in September so the EurAsia Cup is a great opportunity for Des to reacquaint himself with the experienced players and integrate with the younger guys.”

Smyth is relishing the opportunity to be part of the inaugural EurAsia Cup with Jiménez and the nine other members of Team Europe - Thomas Björn, Jamie Donaldson, Victor Dubuisson, Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño, Stephen Gallacher, Pablo Larrazábal, Joost Luiten, Graeme McDowell and Thorbjørn Olesen.

He said: “I am very much looking forward to working with Miguel and the European players at the EurAsia Cup. I already know a lot of the players such as Graeme, Thomas, Gonzalo and Stephen and I am looking forward to getting to know the rest of the guys.

“I feel I can bring a lot of experience to the role of Vice-Captain and I will be there to support Miguel and hopefully offer some good advice when required. I am thrilled to have been asked to be a Vice-Captain for both The Ryder Cup and the EurAsia Cup and I’m looking forward to getting started in Malaysia in a couple of weeks.”

The announcement of Smyth as Vice-Captain to Jiménez means the teams for the EurAsia Cup presented by DRB–HICOM are now complete after Asian Captain Thongchai Jaidee announced Boonchu Ruangkit as his Vice-Captain earlier today.
